Knights Advance To Playoffs
Last Friday, the men's soccer team secured a spot in the postseason by defeating Imperial Valley, 8-0, at home in the season finale.

The Knights finished the 2009 season in second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with an undefeated record of 8-0-4, just one point behind Palomar (9-1-2).

The Knights' overall record was 12-3-6, which has earned them the No. 12-seed in the CCCAA South Regional Playoffs. They will be playing at No. 5-seed Golden West (13-6-1) in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.

City and Golden West did play a match earlier this season on Sept. 2 with the Knights winning, 3-2.

This is the fifth time in the last six years that Head Coach Milton Hidalgo has led the Knights into the postseason.

Whorley, Da Silva Earn PCAC Athlete of the Week Honors
Grant Da Silva (men's soccer) and Sarah Whorley (women's volleyball) were each selected by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as its Men's and Women's Athletes of the Week.

Sophomore defender Grant Da Silva played a key role in wins last week against Southwestern, 1-0, and Mira Costa, 3-1. At Southwestern, Da Silva made the save of the match by stopping a shot that got past the goalkeeper to preserve the 1-0 victory. In the match against Mira Costa, Da Silva defended their best forward and did not allow him to get a shot on goal.

Whorley, a freshman middle blocker, totaled 22 kills in two sweeps last week. Whorley and the Knights beat Southwestern (25-10, 25-19, 25-19) and Imperial Valley (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) to improve to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the PCAC.

Freshman Hannah Andrews was strong at the libero/defensive specialist position as she tallied 17 digs. Freshman setter Kristina Fernandez was accurate all match as she recorded 42 assists.

The Knights, who have won four of their last five matches, reached the 11-win mark for the first time since the 2005 season when they finished 12-7 overall.

Knights Stay Undefeated in PCAC
The men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 1-0 win at Southwestern on Friday afternoon.

The Knights' two leading scorers teamed up for the lone goal of the match. Team captain Devin Garcia scored his 16th goal of the season on a pass from Justin Picou, who recorded his 10th assist of the season.

The Knights (11-3-5, 7-0-3) have not lost a match in PCAC play and currently stand in first place with two matches remaining in the regular season. They finish with a match at San Diego Mesa on Nov. 11 and a home match on Nov. 13, both at 1:00 p.m.

11/4/09 - Women's Volleyball
Knights Sweep Southwestern
The women's volleyball team defeated visiting Southwestern College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-19), on Wednesday evening. The victory completed a season sweep of the Jaguars as the Knights also beat them, 3-1, on Oct. 9.

The Knights got ahead early in the first game with an 8-1 lead and did not look back as they won, 25-10. With the game tied at 14-14 in the second game, the Knights turned up the heat and finished the game on an 11-5 run to win 25-19.

The Jaguars stayed close throughout the third game, but the Knights were able to hold them off with another 25-19 win.

Freshman outside hitter Kiyana Aiono recorded 12 kills for the Knights. Freshman Brittany Karls had 26 defensive digs and freshman Kristina Fernandez had a game-high 32 assists.

The Knights improved to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the PCAC. It is the second consecutive season that City has achieved the 10-win mark.

Freshman middle blocker Darlene Nwagbuo had a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Sarah Whorley had four blocks and freshman outside hitter Kiyana Aiono recorded 19 digs.

The Knights improved to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the PCAC.

Knights Get 5th Sweep of Season With 3-0 Win Over Cuyamaca
SDCC's women's volleyball team came into Friday night's match ready to play as they took care of business with a quick 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-14) sweep of Cuyamaca.

The Knights pounced on the Coyotes early with a first game victory of 25-8. The second game was a struggle as the Knights fell behind 12-7, but they responded with an 18-4 run to win 25-16.

SDCC made sure that a fourth game would not be played by not allowing Cuyamaca to take a lead at any point in the third game. The Knights jumped ahead with a 15-6 lead and did not look back as they eventually won 25-14.

Freshman outside hitter Brittany Karls led the Knights with eight kills and freshman setter Kristina Fernandez recorded 27 assists. Karls, Sarah Whorley and Darlene Nwagbuo were strong defensively with three blocks a piece.

10/22/09 - Women's Soccer
Early Goals Are Difference In Knights' 2-1 Loss
The women's soccer team gave up two goals in the first 24 minutes as they struggled to contain Miramar's offense and eventually lost, 2-1.

Miramar was on the attack early and often as they forced the Knights to bunker in on defense for most of the game. In the 11th minute, Miramar's Bree Duckworth scored off a rebound to give the Jets the early 1-0 lead.

Thirteen minutes later, Miramar's Danica Caudillo found Ashley Moore inside the penalty area for the easy goal and the 2-0 advantage.

Although the Knights were on their heels the rest of the half, their defense stabilized and kept Miramar out of the net.

In the 57th minute, the Knights got back into to it with a goal by Vynessa Diblasio. The Knights' Andrea Marin took the ball after Miramar's defense could not clear it and found Diblasio who beat the Jets' goalkeeper with a grounder on the left side.

Diblasio and Marin, both at the forward positions, took pressure of the Knights' defense as they became aggressive throughout the second half and desperately tried for the equalizer, but couldn't get it.

Miramar had their own chances to get separation from the Knights, but goalkeeper Rebekah Hash was terrific in goal as she recorded 11 saves. Her athletic ability was on display as she dove and jumped with her outstretched hands to make fantastic stops.

The Knights record now moves to 4-8-3 overall and 2-6-2 in the PCAC.

Knights Stay Undefeated in PCAC With 3-1 Victory
The men's soccer team defeated PCAC-rival San Diego Mesa, 3-1, on Friday and improved to 7-3-4 overall and 3-0-2 in the PCAC.

The Knights came out aggressive on offense as they looked to get an early lead and it paid off in the 25th minute. Knights' sophomore forward Justin Picou drew a foul in the penalty area after a quality give-and-go between he and sophomore Oliver Magdaleno. Freshman captain Devin Garcia beat Mesa's goalkeeper on the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead.

City went ahead 2-0 in the 35th minute on an impressive header by freshman midfielder Grant Da Silva. Leonardo Perez took a free kick from the right side after a foul and sent in a perfect ball to Da Silva who then headed it in on the left side.

Mesa cut the lead in half after a 48th minute goal from Thiago Batista. He took a free kick from 30 yards out that hit the bottom left corner of the net.

The Knights, however, would get an insurance goal in the 60th minute as Perez, who had a strong performance throughout, once again set up a teammate for a header off a free kick. This time it was Picou who was the recipient of Perez' accurate pass.

The Knights held off the Olympians the rest of the way and got the important victory they needed as they stayed in second place in conference, two points behind Palomar.
