Knights Rally
Back From 17 Down To Beat Palomar, 61-51
After falling behind by as many as
17 points in the first half at Palomar, the Knights stormed back
to tie the game at 30-30 after a Carleton Coleman tip-dunk just
before the halftime buzzer.
The Knights continued their rally in
the second half and went on to win, 61-51. Sophomore guard
Gaileh Omar scored 17 points off the bench including 4-of-8 from
three-point territory. Freshman guard Timmell Thomas was also a
big contributor off the bench as he put in 12 points.

Knights' Winning
Streak Ended By Miramar
The men's basketball team struggled
offensively as they shot only 34 percent in a 75-59 loss to
Miramar on Friday night.
Miramar, looking to avenge an 89-87 double overtime loss to the
Knights on December 9, took a 39-35 lead into the halftime
break. The Jets then started the second half with a 12-1 run to
take a 51-36 lead.
The Knights closed the gap to
57-47 with eight minutes left, but that would be the closest
they would get. Miramar, however, put the game away with an 11-1
run in the next four minutes to go ahead 68-48.
Sophomore forward Anthony Calhoun
and freshman guard Steven Aldridge were the only Knights to
score in double figures. Calhoun had a team-high 12 points and
five rebounds. Aldridge finished with 10 points and three
steals.
The 75-59 loss was the Knights'
first of 2010 as they started the calendar year with a four-game
winning streak. City's five-game homestand ended with a 4-1
record.

Four In a Row For
The Knights
Freshman center Travis Wilson led
SDCC with 20 points and seven rebounds in a 73-68 victory over
Grossmont, the Knights fourth straight.
The Knights fell behind 28-16 in the
first half after a 12-2 run by Grossmont, but City quickly
countered with a 12-2 run of their own to cut the deficit to
30-28. By halftime, the Knights were down 36-31.
In the second half, SDCC got much
more aggressive on offense by attacking the Griffins' interior
defense. Down 46-40, the Knights went on a 23-4 run to take a 13
point lead with 8:21 left. During that run, the Knights scored
12 points in the paint, including five layups. They also drew
several fouls on Grossmont and made 5-of-7 free throws during
that stretch.
The Griffins weren't discouraged
though as they turned up their defensive pressure with a
full-court press and forced the Knights into five turnovers in a
three-minute stretch. Grossmont rallied with a 16-5 run that
brought them to within two points at 68-66 after a three-point
basket by Branden Pride with 1:14 remaining.
The Knights, however, came up big
on the free throw line in the final minute. Sophomore guard
Gaileh Omar knocked down 3-of-4 from the line and freshman guard
Steven Aldridge calmly hit two free throws with two seconds left
to seal the 73-68 win.
Omar finished with 15 points,
five rebounds and three steals. Aldridge ended up with 11
points, seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore center
Carleton Coleman gave the Knights a much-needed boost off the
bench as he scored six points and blocked three shots in 12
minutes of action.
The game was originally scheduled
to be played at Grossmont, but was moved to City due to flooding
at the Grossmont gym.

Knights Hang On
For 59-57 Win Over Rival Mesa
The men's basketball team earned
their third straight win as they edged San Diego Mesa, 59-57, at
home on Friday night.
The
Knights, who were playing their third consecutive home game, had
a dominating start. They went ahead 28-10 on a layup by freshman
forward Abdi Faras with 6:52 left in the first half. It looked
as though the Knights were going to have an easy night, but Mesa
quickly turned things around as they stormed back with a 14-2
run to cut City's lead to 30-24 at the half.
Mesa cut the deficit to 30-28
early in the second half, but the Knights created some
separation with two successful free throws from Gaileh Omar and
a three-point basket from freshman guard Steven Aldridge to go
up 35-28.
Later, Aldridge hit his third
three-pointer of the game with 11:54 left to give the Knights
their biggest lead of the second half at 45-38. Mesa,
however, came back once again and tied the game on three
different occasions with the last one coming on Broxton Dawson's
jumper to even it at 53-53 with 2:09 on the clock.
Aldridge came back on the other
end with a layup to give the Knights a lead they would not lose
again. Down 58-55 with 16 seconds left, Mesa had a chance to
tie, but committed a turnover and had to foul City's Travis
Wilson who hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal the victory.
Aldridge led the Knights with 16
points and Omar joined him in double figures with 11 points,
five assists and three steals.

Knights Get 74-63
Win Over Mira Costa
Led by Timell Thomas' 22 points, the
Knights earned their second straight win by defeating Mira
Costa, 74-63, at home on Friday night.
After falling behind 13-9, Thomas
nailed a three-pointer to start a 10-1 run by the Knights that
gave them a 19-14 lead midway through the first half. City
eventually extended their lead to 39-29 at the half after
Anthony Calhoun's fast break layup just before the buzzer.
With the Knights leading 49-40
with 12:45 left to play, Mira Costa forced their way back into
the game with an 8-0 run that cut their deficit to 49-48 with
10:37 remaining.
The Knights, however, would not
allow Mira Costa to get any closer. Ahead 59-56 with just over
four minutes left, City went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.
Freshman guard Steven Aldridge hit a big three-point basket
during that run that gave the Knights a 10-point lead.
Aldridge and Calhoun both joined
Thomas in double figures with 11 points each. The Knights won
the rebound battle 38-29 and held Mira Costa to 40.7 percent
shooting for the game.

Aldridge Scores
30 as Knights Hang on for 75-71 Victory
Freshman guard Steven Aldridge
scored 22 of his game-high 30 points in the second half of the
Knights' 75-71 win over visiting Imperial Valley on Wednesday
night.
The Knights' win was
the 100th for Head Coach Mitch Charlens, but Aldridge stole the
spotlight on this night. With the Knights down 36-31 in the
final seconds of the first half, Aldridge completed a 4-point
play after getting fouled on a 3-pointer to bring the Knights to
within one at halftime.
After the break, Aldridge scored
the first eight points for the Knights to give them a 43-38
lead. After another 3-pointer with 12:58 left, Aldridge had
scored 15 of 17 points for City in a 7:13 stretch.
Imperial Valley, who were
led by Cliff Harrell's 24 points, battled back and took a 55-52
lead after a dunk by Kelvin Fraser, but it didn't last very long
as the game was tied at 56-56 with 5:49 left to play.
City's Travis Wilson broke the
tie and gave the Knights the 59-56 lead for good with a 3-point
play after getting fouled on a layup. Aldridge helped the
Knights hang on for the 75-71 win by making all eight of his
free throws in the final five minutes. He made 14-of-15 free
throws overall and also added seven rebounds.
Wilson finished with 10 points
and seven rebounds and sophomore forward Dunnell Webb Jr. put in
17 points, all of which came in the first half.

Knights
Drop PCAC Home Opener
After falling behind by as many as 10 points in the
second half, the Knights came back to pull within one
point with 24 seconds left, but Palomar made their free
throws down the stretch and held on to win, 75-70.
Had the Knights completed the comeback, it would have
been the second straight win after being down by double
digits. In the PCAC opener at Miramar on Wednesday, the
Knights rallied back from 17 down to win in double
overtime, 89-87.
In Friday's game, the Knights overcame an early 7-point
deficit to take a 32-29 lead at the half after Gaileh
Omar’s buzzer-beating jumper. It was a seesaw battle
early in the second half, but Palomar’s Kevin Deeb broke
a 38-38 tie with a fast break layup to give the Comets
the lead for good.
Palomar would build their lead to 10 points with 10:54
to play, but the Knights were not done yet. They chipped
away at the Comets’ lead and eventually came to within
one point at 68-67 after Anthony Calhoun’s layup with 24
seconds remaining. City then went into foul mode as they
hoped Palomar would miss free throws, but the Comets’
Mike Brown came through for his team by making 4-of-5
free throws to seal the win.
Dunell Webb led the Knights with 13 points in 36 minutes
of action. Omar also finished in double figures with 11
points. The Comets’ Brown had a game-high 25 points.
