Knights Defeat
Mesa, 46-31, For 2nd Win in a Row
Sophomore guard Bethany Wong led the
Knights with 20 points and nine rebounds in a 46-31 win over
PCAC rival San Diego Mesa at home on Friday night.
Both teams struggled to put points
on the board in the first half. Neither team was able to get to
double figures until Knights' sophomore Shaelei Lucas hit a
jumper to give City an 11-7 lead with 7:07 left in the half.
Although the Knights shot a poor 32 percent in the half they
took a 17-11 lead into halftime after holding Mesa to 12.1
percent from the floor. Mesa made only four of their 33 shots in
the half.
In the second period, Mesa cut
the Knights' lead to 23-20 after a three-point basket by Anglea
Eley with 14:02 left, but that would be as close as they got.
City went on a 19-6 run that gave them a 42-26 lead with 2:09
remaining. Wong scored 11 points during that run including a
jumper, a layup, a three-pointer, two free throws and another
jumper.
Freshman forward Michelle Brown
scored nine points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds and five
blocks.
The Knights will play five of
their final six games on the road beginning with Palomar on Feb.
3 at 5:00 p.m.

Wong Scores 28 as
the Knights Upset Imperial Valley, 68-55
The women's basketball team had one
of their best performances of the season, if not the best, in a
68-55 victory over Imperial Valley at home on Wednesday night.
Sophomore guard Bethany Wong led
all players with 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting. She also pulled
down six rebounds and had two steals.
Imperial Valley started the game
out in a full-court press, but the Knights easily broke it
nearly every time down the floor. The Knights took advantage and
went on a 12-0 run early in the game to go ahead 15-5.
The Arabs got within two or three
points on several occasions, but the Knights had an answer each
time as they built the lead back up to eight points. At the
half, City was ahead 37-29.
The second half started with an
8-0 run by the Knights. A layup by Michelle Brown, a jumper by
Wong and two straight jumpers by Molly Magee gave them their
biggest lead of the game at 45-29. Imperial Valley got back into
the game with the same press that wasn't working in the first
half. The Arabs forced the Knights into 14 turnovers in a span
of five minutes to cut their deficit to 52-45 with 5:45 left.
Wong came up huge on the next two
possessions for the Knights. She hit a jumper and then nailed a
three-pointer from the top of the arc to extend City's lead to
12 and pretty much put the game away. The Knights tightened up
their defense down the stretch and won 68-55.
Sophomore forward Shaelei Lucas
scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds. Freshman
forward Michelle Brown scored eight points and grabbed 11
rebounds. Freshman guard D'Arjene Porter put in eight points to
go with six rebounds and six steals in 40 minutes of action.

Knights Fall To
Grossmont, 71-49
The women's basketball team got
behind early and could never recover as they lost to Grossmont,
71-49, at home on Friday night.
The game was tied 11-11 in the first
half, but The Griffins went on 16-0 run and eventually took a
41-21 lead at halftime.
The second half did not get any
better for the Knights as they fell behind by as many as 30
points. The Knights shot only 27.7 percent for the game and
committed 29 turnovers that led to 26 points for Grossmont.
Sophomore guard Bethany Wong was
the only player to score in double figures for the Knights as
she put in 12 points to go with 10 rebounds and two blocks.
1/15/10
Knights Downed by
Mira Costa, 57-47
Freshman guard D'Arjene Porter had
16 points and five rebounds in a 57-47 loss to Mira Costa on
Friday night.
The Knights had trouble putting
the ball through the hoop as they shot 31 percent from the floor
in the first half and fell behind by as many as nine, but went
into the locker room down just six at 27-21.
City got as close as 33-29 early
in the second half after a pair of free throws by sophomore
guard Bethany Wong, but Mira Costa went on a 12-4 run to take a
45-33 lead with 9:40 left.
The Knights played tough defense
throughout as they held Mira Costa to 28.8 percent shooting, but
City could not cut into Mira Costa's lead due to their own poor
shooting. SDCC had two stretches of nearly four minutes in the
second half without scoring and could not get any closer than
eight points the rest of the way. They shot only 21.9 percent in
the second half and 26.2 percent for the game.
Freshman guard Felicity Pet was
the only other player for the Knights to score in double figures
as she put in 11 points. Freshman forward Michelle Brown put
together another strong performance on the boards and on defense
as she brought down 15 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Although their shots weren't
falling, the Knights' ball movement was great as they had 14
assists on 16 field goals. Their next two games are on the road
at Southwestern on Jan. 20 and at Grossmont on Jan. 22.

Knights Win Big
As They Double Up On Cuyamaca, 86-43
The women's basketball team put up
their highest point total of the season in a one-sided, 86-43,
victory over visiting Cuyamaca on Wednesday night.
Sophomore guard Bethany Wong got
things going for the Knights by scoring the first points of the
game on a three-pointer that gave them a lead they would not
relinquish. The Knights jumped out to a 19-6 advantage and never
looked back as they kept their foot on the pedal for all 40
minutes.
The Knights had built a 21-point
lead by halftime and it inflated to as many as 47 late in the
second half. Their offense was working as good as at any point
this season. Both the starters and reserves were able to find
the right option and attack the paint throughout the game. City
outscored Cuyamaca 50-16 on points in the paint.
The Knights also had a 27-2
advantage on fast break points, a 15-3 advantage on second
chance points and an impressive 44-6 edge on bench points.
Five Knights scored in double
figures for the first time this season. They were led by
freshman forward Michelle Brown who scored 19 points and brought
down 15 rebounds. It was her eighth double-double of the season.
She also had three steals and two blocks.
Freshman forward Natalie Olague
had her best game of the season as she put contributed 17 points
and seven rebounds off the bench. Wong put in 15 points and
collected five rebounds. Starting guards D'Arjene Porter and
Molly Magee scored 14 and 11, respectively.
Freshman forward Eboni Maynor was
a huge contributor to the Knights' 53-29 rebound edge as she
brought down a season-high 12 rebounds.
The Knights' next game will be on
Friday, Jan. 15 as they host Mira Costa at 7 p.m.

Knights Lose PCAC
Home Opener, 78-60, to Palomar
It was a tale of two halves for the
women's basketball team in the conference home opener on Friday
night. The Knights were down only two after the first 20
minutes, but the wheels came off in the second half as they end
up losing to Palomar, 78-60.
The Knights (1-15, 0-2 PCAC) got off
to a great start as they went ahead 11-3 after two straight
three-point baskets by freshman guard Felicity Pet. They were up
on first place Palomar (11-4, 2-0 PCAC) 18-9 seven minutes into
the game, but Palomar tied the game at 19-19 with a 10-1 run
midway through the first half and eventually took a 35-33 lead
at the half.
Although the Palomar Comets
collected 16 offensive rebounds in the half, the Knights defense
held strong as the Comets were only allowed six second chance
points. The Knights defense also held Palomar to 23.1 percent
from the floor on 9-of-39 shooting.
The second half was a different
story as the Knights could not duplicate the first half results.
Palomar, led by Nyla Bailey's 19 points and 12 rebounds, started
the half on a 16-2 run to break the game open. They eventually
built their lead up to as many as 25 points.
The Comets' size was a big
difference, especially on the boards. They outrebounded the
Knights 57-36 overall and 30-11 on offensive rebounds.
Sophomore guard Bethany Wong led
the Knights with 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore guard Molly Magee put in 11 points and dished out four
assists.

Knights Fall To
Compton, 72-61
The women's basketball team came
into Saturday night's game against Compton looking to build off
their third place finish at the San Diego City Invitational
Tournament a week ago, but City could not overcome a 21-point
deficit and lost, 72-61.
The Lady Knights fell behind early as they weren't able to find
any kind of rhythm on offense in the first half. They shot 11.8
percent on 2-of-17 shooting while allowing Compton to make 41.4
percent of their shots. SDCC went into the halftime break down
30-12.
Led by Valeeta Perry's 24 points,
Compton extended its lead to 21 points four minutes into the
second half, but that's when things turned around for City.
Freshman guard D'Arjene Porter became more aggressive on the
offensive end as she scored eight of her 13 points during an
18-4 run that cut the Lady Knights' deficit to 47-40 with 9:12
remaining in the game. Compton, however, responded with an 11-4
run and did not allow the Lady Knights to come closer than nine
points the rest of the game.
Sophomore guard Bethany Wong led
the Lady Knights in scoring for the second straight game with 17
points. Freshman forward Michelle Brown recorded her third
double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

steals.

Desert, Wins 3rd Place
The women's basketball team defeated
Desert, 86-55, in the third place game at the San Diego City
Invitational Tournament held at Harry West Gymnasium this past
weekend.
The Knights got an early spark
off the bench from Bethany Wong. With the Knights down 8-5, Wong
came in and scored 15 straight points in a span of 2:33 to give
City a 20-8 lead that they would never relinquish. Wong made two
free throws, a 3-pointer, a layup, three more free throws, a
jumper and another 3-pointer during that run.
Desert would never recover and
the Knights built the lead to as many as 35 points in the second
half.
Wong finished with a game-high
and tournament-high 28 points on 9-14 shooting. She made all
seven of her free throws and also recorded seven rebounds, three
assists and three steals in 25 minutes of action.
Freshman forward Michelle Brown
also had a great game as she recorded her second double-double
of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
The Knights beat SDCC's Alumni
team in the opening game of the tournament, 62-47, but lost in
the semi-finals to the eventual tournament champions, Irvine
Valley, 69-55. The Knights hung tight with Irvine Valley
for most of the game and even had it tied 53-53 with 4:38 left
to play, but the Lasers finished with a 16-2 run.
City's Michelle Brown was
selected to the All-Tournament Team along with Justine Chacon of
Saddleback (consolation champion), Keyanna Johnson of L.A.
Southwest (2nd Place) and D.J. Butler of Irvine Valley
(champions). Erika Garcia also of Irvine Valley won the MVP of
the tournament.

their first home game of the new season to Moorpark, 72-51.
Knights' freshman forward Michelle Brown recorded a
double-double with a team-high 19 points and game-high 15
rebounds.
The Knights fell
behind 21-11 midway through the first half and could never
recover as they struggled with their offense. They went into the
halftime break down, 37-26. City cut the deficit to 40-32 early
in the second half, but that would be as close as they got.
Moorpark went on a 17-3 run in the next seven minutes to put the
game out of reach and eventually won, 72-51.
Moorpark was led by Molly
Carson's 21 points and seven rebounds. SDCC shot 30.9% from the
field while Moorpark made 45.8% of their shots. The Knights did
force the Raiders into 25 turnovers, but were unable to take
advantage as they only scored 13 points off those turnovers.
