Radio-TV-Film Department Scholarships

The San Diego City College Foundation awards more than $150,000 each year to students for college fees, books, tuition and other expenses. Each department awards its own Scholarships. The Radio TV Film Department currently offers five scholarships honoring former members of our faculty who made a huge impact on the media industry. Sid Forman - One $500 scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in honor of Professor Sid Forman. After joining City College in 1967, he taught film making, film analysis and writing here for over 30 years. Sid was an avid photographer who trained students in all aspects of of the craft. He was a professor of Film and Television in the Radio/TV Department at City College before moving to the Learning Center. Sid retired in 2000 and passed away in 2007. His students always enjoyed his teaching style and sense of humor. The goal of this scholarship is to seek, reward and encourage students who demonstrate talent, persistence and artistic excellence in all aspects of film production, photography and/or Radio/TV.

    Criteria:
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Must have a declared major in one of the above mentioned disciplines at City College.
  • Must have completed six (6) units in one of the above mentioned disciplines at City College. 
  • Must submit two (2) letters of recommendation from instructors.
  • Essay: 1-2 pages, typed and double-spaced (see application for details)

Robert Gibb, Jazz Radio - Two $300 scholarships

The family of Robert Gibb has created this scholarship for students of the Radio-TV-Film Department at City College. The recipient would have to be a follower of jazz and want to share the rich history of the genre.

    Criteria:
  • 2.5 GPA or better
  • Must be currently enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) units in the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a history of involvement with, or a passion for jazz music.

Fred Lewis - Two $500 scholarships

Fred Lewis was a well known and much loved television talent and professor at City College. Fred began his career as a radio announcer at age 18, honing his talents on numerous television and radio assignments over the years. His accomplishments include turning KSDO Radio into an all news station, the creation of Telepulse on Channel 8, and his long-running and award-winning television interview program, The Heart of San Diego. Fred joined the San Diego City College Telecommunications Department in 1975. He taught Television Performance and Public Speaking for many years, and his students included future professionals Bree Walker, Whitney Southwick and Lena Nozizwe. The goal of this scholarship is to seek, reward and encourage individuals who display talent, persistence, and artistic excellence in performance aspects of communications.

    Criteria:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien
  • Must be enrolled at San Diego City College in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must be a declared communications major.
  • Must have completed six (6) units in Radio-TV-Film.
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from an instructor.
  • Must submit a 1-2 page, typed, double-spaced essay, or a 2-3 minute video or audio production on their interest in performance for Radio and TV and future goals.

Hope Shaw - One $500 scholarship

Hope Shaw tragically passed away on April 6, 2005 while swimming in the ocean near La Paz, Mexico. She began her career as a documentary and public affairs producer at Channel 10 in San Diego. In 1967, Hope joined the San Diego City College Radio-TV-Film Department and she taught screenwriting, film and video production, and news courses; she served as the department chair several times during her career. In honor of the beloved Professor Hope Shaw, this scholarship is granted with the goal of seeking, rewarding, and encouraging individuals who show evidence of talent, persistence, and artistic excellence in aspects of communications.

    Criteria:
  • 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Must be enrolled at San Diego City College in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.
  • Must have completed six (6) units in Radio-TV-Film
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from instructors.
  • Essay: 1-2 pages, typed and double-spaced on their interest in radio, future goals and why they should receive the scholarship.
