Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Vocational nursing program information

SPECIAL NOTICE: 8.30.2011

The Vocational Nursing Program at San Diego City College has been funded by the San Diego Community College District Regional Occupation Program (ROP). Legislation requires that as of July, 2011, all students enrolled in ROP programs across the State be high school students. Since a high school diploma or GED is a requirement for admission to the VN Program, ROP funds can no longer be used to support the VN Program.

Recent cuts in the State budget reducing funding to Community Colleges has presented a significant fiscal challenge to the San Diego Community College District and San Diego City College. As a result of these budget and funding cuts, the Vocational Nursing program will not be admitting students in the Spring, 2012 semester as planned.

Future admissions to the Vocational Nursing program are subject to funding. At that time, any applicant currently accepted for admission or currently on the waiting list will have to re-apply to the program, following admission procedures and criteria in place at the time of the application. Any application materials currently on file will not be used for future admissions. Students currently accepted to the Vocational Nursing Program are encouraged to contact the other Vocational Nursing schools in the county for admission. The Administration, Faculty and Staff at City College are saddened by the recent events requiring suspension of admissions to the Vocational Nursing program, and intend to make all efforts to secure funding sufficient to support future admissions.

Nursing is a profession which provides health care to individuals of all ages. Nursing encompasses many activities including health promotion, health maintenance, health care during illness and injury, and rehabilitation. Nurses apply knowledge from the biological, physical, behavioral and nursing sciences to care for clients in varied settings. The purpose of the San Diego City College Vocational Nursing program is to provide an educational opportunity for qualified individuals interested in a career in nursing. Upon successful completion of program requirements, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEXPN). Pass Rates Inquiries regarding program approval may be made by contacting the Board of Vocational Nursing at 2535 Capitol Oaks Rd., Sacramento, CA 95833, 916- 263-7800.

Clinically Based Course Requirements

Students accepted into this program will be required to successfully complete clinically based courses held in health care facilities. These facilities may require background checks, including fingerprinting, as a condition of placement. Refusal to submit to a background check, or failure to meet clearance criteria established by the health care facility, may prevent placement in the clinically-based course, and thus, it may not be possible to successfully progress or complete the program. Health care facilities also require adherence to strict standards of conduct. Facilities may refuse educational access to any person who does not adhere to the facility's standard of safety, health and ethical behavior. This may be cause for removal from the program.
