Knights Win OEC Title, Advance to Team Playoff
The SDCC women's badminton team has won the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) championship for the fifth time in the last seven years after finishing the 2012 regular season with an 8-0 record. The Knights have qualified to play in the regional team playoff against Pasadena City College on Wednesday, May 2.
The winner of that playoff will advance to the CCCAA State Championship to be held at the Harry West Gymnasium on SDCC's campus on Thursday, May 10 at 3 p.m.
City has the top three ranked individual players and the top two doubles teams in the state. LanAnh Nguyen, who won the conference individual championship last Friday and was named MVP of the OEC, will be the No. 1 seed for the CCCAA State Individual Championships beginning Friday, May 11, also to be held at SDCC's Harry West Gym.
Tammy Vu and Loise Zosa will be the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. The doubles team of Nguyen and Vu, who won the conference doubles championship, have earned the No. 1 seed for the state championships. The team of Zoza and Lena Van are seeded No. 2 and the team of Cynthia Wong and Vicky Lor will be the No. 6 seed.
Head Coach Son Nguyen, who was named as OEC Coach of the Year for the 2012 season, is looking to lead the Knights to their fourth state title. Nguyen and his Knights won the state championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The Knights also won the OEC title in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.
