Knights Tough Out 14-7 Victory Over San Francisco to Win CCCAA State Championship
The SDCC women's badminton team has captured the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship after defeating City College of San Francisco, 14-7, on Thursday. It is the fourth time under the direction of head coach Son Nguyen that the Knights have won the state title.
Thursday's championship match was the toughest of the season for the Knights as they had to overcome fatigue and injuries in addition to the the skill of a top notch opponent in San Francisco.
The Orange Empire Conference player of the year, LanAnh Nguyen lost her first match of the season to San Francisco's No. 1 Evonne Zheng in the second round of singles, but Nguyen recovered to help clinch the championship with partner Tammy Vu in a second round doubles win over Zheng and her teammate Yupar Khin.
The Knights previous state championships came in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
