Late Runs Give Knights A 4-2 Win Over Irvine Valley

An RBI double by Bobby Martinez keyed a two-run eighth inning that broke a 2-2 tie and catapulted the Knights to a 4-2 victory over Irvine Valley at Morley Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Knights took a 2-1 lead on Jp Rios' 2-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth, but Irvine Valley came back to tie it in the seventh inning on Ben Deperry's RBI double.

Knights' first baseman Geordy Smith got the bottom of the eighth inning started with a lead-off single. Martinez came up next and hit a deep double to center field that allowed Smith to score what turned out to be the winning run. After a sacrifice bunt by James McKenrick to move Martinez to third base, Henry Grow drove him in to give the Knights an insurance run and a 4-2 lead.

Brien Grant (1-0), who relieved starter Anthony Parise in the seventh inning, earned the win after pitching the final three innings. He had two strikeouts while giving up four hits. Parise gave up two runs off five hits in six innings of work.

The win was the Knights' second straight after losing the season opener at Saddleback. SDCC will now travel to El Camino Compton for a 2 p.m. game on Thursday. The next home game is Saturday at 12 p.m. vs. Fullerton.
