Knights Rout Grossmont to Win 3rd Tourney Championship of the Season

The Knights have made it to the title game of all five tournaments they've played in this season and they came away with their third championship on Sunday with a 96-67 victory over Grossmont to claim the Grossmont College Tournament crown for the second straight year.

Wonder Smith was named tournament MVP for the second consecutive week after leading the Knights on Sunday with a career-high 30 points to go with four rebounds and six assists.

Robert McCoy, who dropped a career-high 30 points in a semifinal win over Los Angeles Southwest on Saturday, had 14 points and eight rebounds in the championship game.

The Knights never trailed in Sunday's game or at any point during the three games they played at the Grossmont Tournament. They built a 13-point halftime lead and blew the game open with a 15-3 run midway through the second half. City's lead grew to as many as 31 as they cruised to their sixth straight win.

Ethan Esposito recorded his first double-double of the year with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.

City tied a season-high with 11 three-pointers on 22 attempts and shot over 50 percent (53.2) from the floor for the fifth time this season.

The Knights made it to the final by dispatching College of the Desert, 99-77, on Friday and L.A. Southwest, 101-89, on Saturday.

Smith led the Knights in the win over Desert with 22 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Trevor Drake came off the bench to record season-highs in points (10) and rebounds (11).

In addition to McCoy's 30-point performance in the win over L.A. Southwest, Luis Salgado added 13 points and Joseph Riley chipped in with nine points, both off the bench.

City is now 13-2 this season with two more tournaments to play before conference season begins in January. The Knights will have a 10-day break before returning to action against Irvine Valley on December 14 in the opening round of the Saddleback College tournament.
