No. 17 Knights Beat Miramar 84-72, Extend Win Streak to 5
2/1/2012
Marvin Sykes scored a game-high 28 points and Stephon Lamar added 19 for the Knights, who used a 14-2 run late in the second half to pull away for the 84-72 win over visiting Miramar.
The Knights (17-6, 11-1 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference) held a 61-50 lead with 11:08 remaining in the second half, but Miramar wasn't going away. The Jets (5-14, 4-8 PCAC), who were led by Alberto Ganis' 23 points and 14 rebounds, cut the Knights lead to 68-65 with six minutes left.
The Knights' Devyn Iglehart sparked a 14-2 run in the next 4:42 by scoring consecutive layups. The second was followed by a free throw to complete a 3-point play. In the midst of the Knights' run was an alley-oop dunk by Menas Sephens that brought the crowd to their feet. Sykes gathered a rebound after a missed jumper by Ganis and took it across half court then threw a lob pass from 25 feet out that Stephens somehow caught and dunked while being fouled.
After making the free throw, Stephens came back with another fast break hoop on the next possession to cap off the 14-2 run and give the Knights a comfortable 82-67 lead with 1:18 left.
Stephens finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Iglehart chipped in with 16 points.
With Imperial Valley's loss on Wednesday, the Knights have moved into sole possession of first place in the PCAC. City is ranked No. 17 in the state and No. 9 in Southern California.
