Akpa's Free Throw in OT Gives Knights 1st Win
2/1/2012
Ony Akpa scored one point on Wednesday, but it was the most important point for the Knights because her free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining in overtime gave them a 55-54 victory over Palomar. It was the Knights' first win of the season.
Priscilla Contreras led the Knights with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Eyga Mojus had a game-high 19 rebounds to go with 10 points.
The Knights led 49-44 with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Comets. Palomar's Alliya Pinckney made a layup with 10 seconds left and then, after a Knights' turnover, Rhaissel Yasay hit the game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left to force overtime.
In the extra session, the Knights fell behind 54-49 with 3:01 left, but it was their turn to rally back. A 3-pointer by Mojus and a jumper by Contreras tied the game at 54-54 with 55 seconds remaining. Then, in what looked like the final possession of overtime, Pinckney missed what would've been the game-winning bucket. Akpa was in position for the rebound, but was fouled and sent to the free throw line.
Akpa's first attempt sailed high over the rim, but banked off the backboard and went in. Her second free throw missed and was rebounded by Palomar's Katelyn Bonner, but time expired before any shot could be attempted and the Knights immediately went into celebration mode as they had finally earned their first win of the season.
Cat Wright recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Victoria Ruth had 12 points and nine rebounds.
