Joanna Lopez Qualifies For State Championship; Knights Equal Best Finish at Regionals Since 2000

The San Diego City College cross country team continued its strongest season in years by placing 25th at the Southern California Regional Championship in Santa Clarita. The team was again led by freshman Joanna Lopez who secured an individual qualifier to the state championship in Fresno with her 51st place finish in 21:04.

Lopez's state qualifying run was a first for the women's program in over 10 years and only the second since 2000. The 25th place finish as a team equals City's best result at the regional championship in 17 years. This was the fifth time since 2000 that the Knights participated in the meet.

"The team has been a real pleasure to work with this year," said Head Coach Marco Anzures. "They are a cohesive, hard working group that has put together one of the best seasons in recent memory. That comes from being consistent, staying positive, and learning from each race experience. Now we have an individual qualifier to the state meet that will inspire next year's team."

Also running strongly for the Knights was freshman Emily Reilly who finished as the Knights second runner in 147th place (24:38). Reilly was followed closely by sophomore Viridiana Ayala in 148th place (24:45).
