Hannah Shafer Pitches Perfect Game
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Shafer retired all 18 batters she faced on Tuesday and wound up with an 8-0 win and a perfect game, the first of her career.
Shafer struck out five and forced the 13 others to ground out. SDCC outfielders never saw any action as no ball went past the infield. Brittany Wright, Ashley Whitmore, Elizabeth Vaca and Jenna Howell all did their part in preserving Shafer's perfection.
On offense, the Knights scored one run in each of the first three innings and then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning. After stealing third, Wright went on to score the first run of the inning after a wild pitch. Later in the inning with two out, Howell and Jenea Marjama hit back-to-back RBI doubles to give City a 6-0 lead. Marjama then came around to score on an errant throw by the catcher.
Shafer retired the side in the sixth inning and then, with two out in the bottom of the sixth, Wright came up and hit a solo home run to left field that ended the game because of the 8-run rule.
