Knights Beat Mesa, 1-0; Complete Season Sweep
For the first time since the 2007 season, the SDCC women's softball team completed a season sweep of PCAC rival San Diego Mesa after hanging on for a 1-0 victory over the Olympians on Friday afternoon.
Knights' starting pitcher Hannah Shafer and Olympians' starter Natalie Smith both had stellar performances as they shut down the opposing batters. They kept the game scoreless until the ninth inning when the Knights finally broke through. Alyssa Ortega was hit by pitch to lead off the ninth. Nicole Samida replaced her as a pinch runner and was moved over to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Liz Vaca. Ashley Whitmore, who was 3-for-4 on the day, came through with a single to score Samida.
It was all the Knights needed on offense. Shafer, who struck out 10, closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth to give the Knights the much needed win and sweep of Mesa.
City improved to 17-16-1 overall and 8-3 in the PCAC. They are one game behind Grossmont and Palomar in the race for the conference championship with four games remaining. The Knights have one game left against Grossmont and two more against Palomar.
