Knights Go 3-2 at SDCC Tourney
The Knights advanced to the championship game of the Cardinal Bracket at the 17th Annual SDCC Softball Tournament, but fell to College of the Desert, 5-2.
The Knights opened the tournament on Friday morning with an 8-2 loss to Santa Barbara, but came back with a 10-2 win over Napa Valley in the afternoon. Nicole Clites pitched five innings and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six. Clites also helped her own cause on offense by going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
City carried the momentum from Friday's win into Saturday's single elimination tournament. The Knights, who were in the Cardinal Bracket, started the day with a 5-1 win over Mt. San Jacinto. Clites pitched seven innings and gave up one earned run on four hits. She also had three strikeouts. With the game tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning, Lisa Pena came through with a two-out RBI single that gave City the lead for good. The Knights added three more runs in the sixth and Clites shut down the Eagles in the seventh for the win.
SDCC played immediately afterwards against Rio Hondo and were victorious once again. The Knights broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alexa DaRosa hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run. Later in the inning, Gloria Blanco hit a 2-RBI single to center field to give City the 8-5 lead. Nicolet Paige then closed out Rio Hondo in the sixth for the win. Paige went all six innings and gave up four earned runs on nine hits.
In the championship game of the Cardinal Bracket, the Knights seemed to run out of gas as they lost to Desert, 5-2. City took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Rio Hondo tied it in the third and took the lead for good in the fourth inning.
Saddleback won the tournament championship after defeating Grossmont, 4-0, in the title game of the White Bracket.
