Knights Hold On for 3-2 Victory Over Grossmont
The Knights avenged a 2-1 loss earlier this month at Grossmont by defeating the Griffins, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights' Paige Nicolet earned the complete game victory by pitching all seven innings and giving up eight hits, two walks and no earned runs while striking out three.
The Knights got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first inning that came on a double by Nicole Clites to right center field that scored Lisa Pena from second base.
City put up two more runs in the bottom of third. Alexa DaRosa led the inning off with a single through the left side and Pena followed with a double down the left field line. With the runners in scoring position, Nicolet's ground ball led to a fielding error by Grossmont's Sonia Ray which allowed both DaRosa and Pena to score what turned out to be the winning runs.
The Griffins (12-13, 4-4 PCAC) put some pressure on the Knights in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out. Ray then hit a single to left field that brought in two runs. Nicolet, however, stopped the rally by getting the next batter, Allie Cimmurusti, to pop up and the last batter of the inning, Lauren Vallely, to strike out looking.
Grossmont threatened once again in the top of the seventh after a two-out double by Lindsay Thorstenson, but Nicolet got Jazmine Hamme to ground out for the final out of the game.
The victory moved the Knights into a third place tie with Grossmont in the PCAC. The Knights are 12-9-1 overall and 4-4 in the PCAC.
