Knights Shutout Chaffey, 7-0, In Final Home Game
Paige Nicolet pitched a complete game shutout in the Knights' 7-0 home win over Chaffey (26-8-2) on Saturday afternoon. Nicolet allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out seven in the victory.
The Knights wasted no time in putting runs on the board as they put up five runs in the first inning to take a lead that they would not relinquish.
Virginia Cox, who led off with a single, was brought home for the first run when Lisa Pena doubled to left field on the next at bat. Later in the inning with two outs, Nicole Alvarado hit an RBI single to left field that scored McKenna Clarke from second base for the 2-0 lead. Nicole Clites was then walked to load the bases and Kasandra Enslin hit a single through the right side that scored another two runs to make it 4-0. Aurora Tellez came up next and hit a double to center field that brought in the fifth run of the inning.
Alexa DaRosa led off the third inning with a single and then advanced to third base after stealing two bases during Clites' at bat. Clites grounded out, but DaRosa was able to score on the play to give the Knights a 6-0 lead.
The Knights added a seventh run in the sixth inning when Clarke hit a single down the left field line that scored Pena from third base.
Nicolet, meanwhile, was in a grove as she kept the Chaffey bats quiet. Chaffey threatened in the third and sixth innings with a runner on second base on both occasions, but Nicolet forced a ground out and a fly out to end the innings, respectively.
The Knights finished the week with a 3-1 record after beating Imperial Valley, Grossmont and Chaffey. Their only loss came on Friday at Palomar. The Knights improved to 19-16-1 overall and have a 6-8 PCAC record.
Sophomores Nicole Alvarado, Aurora Tellez, Paige Nicolet and Alexa DaRosa were honored at the end of the game as they played in their final home game at SDCC.
