Knights Rally Falls Short; Lose 16-12 to Grossmont
On any other day, 12 runs off 16 hits probably would've gotten the Knights a victory, but not today as they fell to Grossmont, 16-12, in the third and final meeting with the Griffins. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak against Grossmont that dates back to last season.
Lisa Pena went 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and four runs. Meghan Shaw also went 4-for-4 and had a double, three RBI, and two runs.
The Knights had a nice start with three runs in the opening inning. Pena scored from second base on a fielding error and Crystal Hernandez brought in two more runs on a single up the middle.
The lead did not last very long as Grossmont came back with five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-3 lead. The Knights tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the second, but Grossmont answered with four runs in the third to take a 9-5 advantage.
It looked dire for the Knights after falling behind, 13-6, but they weren't ready to pack it in. With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Pena hit a line-drive 2-run home run to left field that sparked a four-run inning for the Knights. Alex Ross doubled in Shaw and Jazmine Hamme singled in Ross to bring the Knights to within 13-10.
In the bottom of the sixth, after Karla Ferreira and Pena reached, Shaw hit a 2-RBI double to left field that brought SDCC to within a run at 13-12.
Unfortunately for the Knights, that would be as close as they would get. Grossmont scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh and then retired the Knights' side in the bottom of the inning to win, 16-12.
The Knights won the two previous meetings this season. On February 27, the Knights earned a 10-2 home victory. On March 15, the Knights traveled to Grossmont and got a 6-4 win.Box Score
