Knights Bested by Orange Coast, 3-0

    3/5/2014

San Diego City's men's volleyball lost in three straight sets (25-11, 25-21, 25-11) to Orange Coast College on Wednesday night.

In the opening set, the Pirates got out to fast start by serving aggressive. "Coach Turner runs a great program at OCC and his team is playing at a high level," said Head Coach Kevin Pratte. "The Pirates came out and served really effectively. We were out of system due to our passing and it was extremely difficult to side out."

The Knights played one of their best sets of the year in the second set. "Scott came in off the bench and passed really well," said Pratte. "Also, Yev [Chernish] and Allen [Uriarte] made some excellent swings. When we pass well and give ourselves good sets on the pins we are capable of scoring points. It was really fun and enjoyable to be part of set number two."

In set three, the Knights continued to pass well, but OCC picked up their transition defense. "We were sending the ball over with some decent attacks, but OCC did a great job digging the ball and they did an awesome job getting their middles involved in transition," said Pratte. "In set three, we were not capable of stopping the Pirates' transition offense."

Team captain Ian Leibitzke had this to share; "Tonight we showed that we can compete at this level. Orange Coast is one of the best teams in the state and we gave them a run for their money in set two. In set number two we passed really well and executed the coaching staff's strategies. I am looking forward to practicing and preparing for an excellent match against Palomar next week".

The Knights have a week off before they travel to Palomar to take on the Comets on March 12. To get more coverage of the Knights follow them on twitter @SDCCMENSVBALL or check out their Facebook page.
