Serna With 18 Kills in Sweep of Mesa for 8th Straight Win

The women's volleyball team earned its eighth consecutive victory with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 27-25) sweep of Mesa, the Knights biggest rival.

City improved to 15-1 on the season and 4-0 in the PCAC. The 15 wins are the most in the program's history and the eight-match win streak is the longest ever.

Lysette Serna led the way offensively for the Knights with 18 kills and also had 10 digs. She has recorded double figures in kills and digs nine times this season, including the last seven matches.

Knights' setter Breana Reid had 46 assists to go with nine digs, while Brielle McKinnon tallied 10 kills.

The first set was tied tied at 10-10, but City pulled away with a 15-5 run to win.

The Knights jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set, but Mesa recovered quickly and tied it at 7-7. It was tight the rest of the set with six lead changes and 13 ties, including at 20-20. That's when the Knights won three straight points to take control and hung on to win, 25-22.

The third set was another thriller with 14 ties. Mesa had taken a 15-11 lead, but after a timeout, the Knights scored five straight to take the lead.

It seemed as though City was in full control when the Knights went ahead 22-18, but Mesa fought back and evened the score at 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25. On their third match point, the Knights finally put the Olympians away, 27-25, to complete the sweep.

It was the Knights' fourth straight sweep and their 11th overall. They have only lost eight sets so far.
