Knights Get 9th Straight With Upset Over Grossmont

The San Diego City College women's volleyball team ended Grossmont's 48-match PCAC win streak on Wednesday nights with a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23) victory over the No. 7-ranked Griffins to improve to 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the PCAC.

The upset win was City's ninth straight and it was the first time the Knights have beaten Grossmont since October 28, 2009, a streak of 14 matches.

The No. 22-ranked Knights, who will surely move up the rankings next week after the big win, got off to a great start against Grossmont by taking control early in the opening set. City jumped out to a 9-4 lead and never let the Griffins get any closer than three points as the Knights went on to win, 25-16.

With the teams tied at 8-8 in the second set, the Griffins used a 12-3 run to separate themselves from the Knights and went on to win, 25-21, despite a late rally from City.

The Knights went ahead 6-1 to start the third set and eventually stretched their lead to 18-11. Grossmont responded with a 7-1 spurt to cut City's lead to 19-18, but the Knights scored six straight points to win the set, 25-18.

City carried the momentum over to the fourth set as they quickly built an 11-4 advantage. Grossmont fought back and tied it at 20-20. After two more ties at 21-21 and 22-22, the Knights scored 3 of the next four points to win, 25-23, and finally put an end to their 8-year drought against the Griffins by winning the match, 3-1.

The victory gave City sole possession of first place in the PCAC with five matches remaining, including another meeting against the Griffins at Grossmont on November 3. The Knights will host Southwestern on Friday at 5 p.m. and will wrap up the current 5-match home stand against Cuyamaca on October 25 and Imperial Valley on October 27.
