Lyssette Serna Named MVP; Dede Bodnar Chosen As Coach of the Year

The SDCC women's volleyball team had its most successful season in history with a 21-3 overall record and a 9-1 PCAC South record that earned them their first-ever conference title. On Wednesday, the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference handed out several awards to the Knights, including Coach of the Year honors to Dede Bodnar and Co-Most Valuable Player to sophomore Lyssette Serna. Six others on the team were named to the All-PCAC South team.

This is the first time that Coach Bodnar has been named conference coach of the year. She directed the Knights to their best regular season record in team history (21-3) and their first-ever conference championship with a 9-1 PCAC South record.

The Knights had their best start in team history by winning their first seven matches, but that would not be the longest win streak of the season. After losing their first match to Long Beach, Bodnar's Knights rolled off 13 in a row to set a new team record for longest winning streak.

Lyssette Serna made the All-PCAC South first team in her freshman year, but followed that up by being selected as Co-MVP of the conference in her sophomore season. As team captain, Serna led the offensive attack with a 3.63 kills per set average that was 18th best in the state. She recorded a total of 298 kills on the season, which was good for 21st in the state. Her 4.20 digs per set (total of 344) were 25th best in California. Serna was also second on the Knights in service aces with 39. She also added 17 blocks.

Also making the all-conference team were fellow sophomores Alyssa Dincoff (first team), Brielle McKinnon (first team), Breanna Reid (first team), Shatha Julima (second team), and Julia Ferraro (second team). Freshman Megan Seyer earned honorable mention.

The Knights qualified for the playoff for the second consecutive season and will travel to Cypress (18-5) for a first round match on Tuesday, November 21 at 6 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to play either L.A. Pierce or Moorpark on Saturday, November 25.
