Seeds @ City Urban Farm is a job training and leadership development program that selects several apprentices every summer and each semester to learn and work on our 1- acre organic, urban farm on the City College campus in the heart of downtown San Diego. We are the first community college in San Diego to offer this hands-on sustainable urban agriculture apprenticeship program and in fall 2010 we launched the first classes in a new Certificate in Sustainable Urban Agriculture program. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8 am to noon, our apprentices work with professional farmers learning biointensive methods of organic gardening and farming. Through hands-on farm work and attendance of community lectures and events, they learn to:
* Grow and sell organic vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit at a weekly farm stand on campus.
* Practice organic agriculture through composting, propagation, planting, cultivation, pruning, irrigation, pest and disease management.
* Understand issues of sustainability and agriculture, food justice, and food security.
* Compost campus food scraps, engage the community through volunteer work at various gardens and community events, and develop the farm.
