• The NYSP effectively combines federal funds and private
resources to improve the health and physical fitness of young people,
particularly those that are members of low-income families and residents
of economically disadvantaged areas of the United States. Principal
partners in the effort include: 200 colleges and universities throughout
the country, such as San Diego City College; U.S. Department of Health &
Human Services Administration for Children & Families; U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA); various sate and local agencies; national governing
bodies of sports; private organizations and businesses; and the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
• Since1969, NYSP has provided youngsters (ages 10-16) a needed
alternative to drugs and gangs. NYSP features instruction that enhances
self image, teaches the value of communication, serves as a model for fair
play and contributes to the development of life skills that are necessary
for success in a competitive society. Hosted on the San Diego City College
campus, NYSP provides an atmosphere for encouraging youth to aspire to
pursue higher education opportunities.
• NYSP is a cost-effective program that utilizes a federal grant for a
five-week program. As the host institution, San Diego City College donates
facilities, capital equipment, senior administrative staff and other
direct costs.
• Local partners assist NYSP. The San Diego Unified School District offers
reduced-cost daily transportation for participants. The State of
California administers USDA funds that provide daily lunches and snacks to
participants. And, the UCSD Medical Center-Pediatrics Clinic and associate
health care professionals provide free physical examinations to all NYSP
participants.
