Good VS Bad
Design
Applying any
one of these principles will improve the design of your
web pages; combining the principles will help you
to achieve the best results. Even if you have never had
any graphic training, you will see a difference in
your pages by simply applying these four principles.
Don't forget
to check your spelling!
Good
Design
Clean
and clear, easy to use, downloads quickly, and has an institutive navigational
scheme - recipe for repeat visitors. Applying the following principles will add an element of
professionalism to your pages:
-
Align
the text - a simple left edge looks clean (don't
center body text)
-
Add
subheads so the visitor can skim the text - add bold
for contrast
-
Set
headlines closer to their body (<br>
vs. <p>)
-
Repeat
elements - create site in colors that compliment
City's navigation
Bad
Design
Badly
designed pages are confusing and hard to navigate; the
links may lead the visitor to an unexpected page or to a
broken link.
Avoid the following
design errors:
-
TYPING
IN ALL CAPS or Italics
-
Avoid
using elements that disrupt the natural flow of the
page
-
Avoid
animated gifs - ask if the animation is needed to make
a point, if not, leave it out
-
Avoid
meaningless cartoon clipart
-
NO construction
signs of any kind! This is a sign of a new designer -
instead put a date when you expect to complete it.
-
Avoid
underlining words unless they are links.
