Choices Available for Updating Web Pages on City’s Server

1)       You can send in an update to any area on our site that you work with by stating the URL and then the update in the body of an e-mail.  This will be completed in 24 hours in most cases.

2)       If you have web authoring experience you may attend a workshop to be certified so that you may directly edit a program site on our server.  Personal home pages cannot be directly authored on our server at this time.  You need to send in all updates as listed in step one for your personal page (or follow the links in #3) and all class material must be contained on WebCT.

3)       Personal Web Pages – Directory Entries (see links below to update)
You can also reach all of this information under Faculty/Administrator Resources > Web Site Development, at the bottom of all of our web pages.

Administrator Pages

Chairs, Deans, Full Time Faculty or Staff -

Adjunct Faculty
- http://www.sdcity.edu/submitadjunct.asp

PLEASE, don't forget to send in your updates every semester after creating your page.

Site Format
We have a basic site format with the same specific information available for all like sites.  This is called the “core site” (See Core Sites Handout).  This area must remain with the same formatting for site consistency and cohesiveness to remain user friendly to all.

Before adding other information about your program to the site you must update that area first.  You will then add a link on that page (you will be guided in the workshop as to where to put it) that will lead to your newly developed information where you do not duplicate anything on our server.

New Site Ideas, No Authoring Experience
If you want to add a new area for our site your request must be submitted first, approved, and added to the upcoming new contract as it can involve a lot of time in creating and review before it is published.

Please send your request to the City Webmaster at Webmaster@sdcity.info.

The Webmaster is responsible for the design of the web site. I will edit formatting and design on an as needed basis to keep within the college standards and guidelines.

Program coordinators or chairs:
Please be familiar with your area on our web site and keep the information up to date by e-mailing (or appointing a contact to do so) City's Webmaster at Webmaster@sdcity.info  and stating the URL with the update requested.  If you would like to add a new topic to your site please submit your content to City's Webmaster at Webmaster@sdcity.info . Updates will be processed in the order they are received based on content updates first, picture additions second, and new pages third (new pages are usually contracted ahead of time and will be completed at the discretion of the webmaster, or you will be asked to have it included in next years contract due to the time involved).

Hosting your site "OFF SITE"
Faculty/staff/admin cannot have sites off of our server that represent themselves as official City College web pages, nor can they market them or use our logos. We have that in place for a couple of reasons:
One - we don't want to be responsible for their site getting hacked, not being updated, having information that is not accurate, and most of all we don't want students needing to search several URL's (on different servers) to find their information.
Two - if they maintain an outside site, they don't keep our site up to date and students searching our site for information will not locate it with our search engine. This makes our site less effective for students. They can have a site on another server that does not represent itself as official City College web site without any of our logos etc. but they need to send in updates to our site to keep their areas up to date before they spend time on another site. This is such a disservice to students to make them jump around as they use many services at our college and it needs to remain cohesive.

Basic Guidelines and Requirements for Authoring on City's Web Site.

All of your web pages must end in .asp

You must have an all text duplicate web page for each web page you create.

Your all text web page must be named just like it's graphic copy except you will add a txt to the end of the file name.
Example: guidelines.asp  -  guidelinestxt.asp

You must include the college navigation on the top and bottom of all of your pages.  (*note there will be one INCLUDE file for text-only pages and one for graphic pages)

Please compliment the college navigation when designing your pages.

Please keep your site updated by sending in the URL and update to the webmaster - if it has outdated content by more than 30 days it can be removed from our site.

Make sure your pages load in 35 seconds or less on a 28.8 connection (see sidebar>)
When your site is completed please zip it up and send it to the webmaster for review and publishing (make sure that all new sites are contracted for first).

The Webmaster and Dean Tortorici are responsible for the design of the web site. They will edit formatting and design on an as needed basis to keep within the college standards and guidelines.
