Definition:

According to the Title V regulations that govern the California Community Colleges, and in accordance with the State Education Code and State and Federal legislative guidelines:

Learning disability in California Community College adults is a persistent condition of presumed neurological dysfunction, which may also exist, with other disabling conditions. This dysfunction continues despite instruction in standard classroom situations. Learning-disabled adults, a heterogeneous group, have these common attributes:

   a. average to above intellectual ability;
   b. severe processing deficits;
   c. severe aptitude-achievement discrepancy (ies); and
   d. measured achievement in an instructional or employment setting.

Required Documentation:

In order for a student to receive services for a learning disability at City College he/she must provide recent (not more than three years old) assessment results:

• Documentation must include current academic/achievement scores from standardized tests such as the Woodcock Johnson Revised (WJR), Woodcock Johnson III (WJIII), or the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test 2 (WIAT 2).

• Documentation must also include current cognitive/ability scores from standardized test such as: the WJR, the WJ III, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III (WAIS-III), or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children III (WISC III).

All scores should minimally include the standard scores for each subtest, and preferably, include the raw scores.

If the student is unable to provide this information, he/she will need to be assessed by the City College learning disability specialist.

Steps to a Learning Disability Assessment at City College:

     1. Attend a DSPS orientation
     2. Sign a consent form and complete the LD Intake Screening form
     3. Meet with the LD Specialist to review the LD Intake Screening form
     4. Schedule an appointment to meet with a DSPS counselor for an
Intake Interview
     5. Obtain add code and registration instructions for
DSPS 040
         Call ClassTalk and register for DSPS 040
     6. Schedule LD assessment appointments in Room A115 or call 388-3513
     7. Meet with the LD Specialist at scheduled times
