A broad study of the major elements in the Western heritage, from the world of the earliest civilizations to that of the Reformation, designed to further the beginning student's general education, introduce him/ her to the ideas, attitudes, and institutions basic to Western civilizations. 109 History of the United States I 3 hours, 3 units

Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with previous credit for Black Studies 112A, 140A or History 110A.
American civilization in its broad aspects from the period of discovery through Reconstruction. Constitutional crisis, territorial expansion, foreign relations, domestic policies, and cultural patterns correlated in terms of the country's position of leadership in world affairs. This course is recommended for the transfer student. NOTE: The complete one-year course, History 109 and 110, satisfies the requirement in American Institutions and California State Government. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/ univ. UC Transfer Credit: History (HIST) 109, 110 combined with 150, 151, Black Studies 140AB or Chicano Studies 141AB: maximum credit, one series.

115A History of the Americas I 3 hours, 3 units

This course will analyze the Spanish, Portuguese, and African backgrounds of Latin America; Hispanic activities in the Western hemisphere through War of Independence, with analysis of government, the Catholic Church, economic development, society, literature, art, and science. This will be done within a comparative framework with Anglo-American developments to the early 19th century. Completion of both 115A and 115B satisfies the requirement in American Institutions. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

115B History of the Americas II 3 hours, 3 units
Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
This course will analyze the major problems facing major Latin American nations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Church-State relations, economic development, social institutions, cultural development, government and constitutions as compare with those of the United States. Constitutional modernization in the early 20th Century will be compared with the California Constitution. Completion of both 115A and 115B satisfies the requirement in American Institutions.
