Program
Description
The Labor Studies Program offered by San Diego
City College has a unique, comprehensive curriculum that prepares the
student to be an effective labor leader and employee advocate. Program
courses are routinely reviewed and taught by leaders in San Diego’s
labor community and endorsed by the San Diego Labor Council.
The certificate/degree options under the City College Labor Studies
Program are beneficial for students looking to:
- Transfer to a four-year program specializing
in Labor Studies or Human Resources;
- Understand and effectively advocate for
employee rights in the workplace;
- Develop organizing, shop steward, and union
leadership skills;
- Further awareness and understanding of
community needs and services related to workers;
Depending on specialization, students will gain
knowledge of federal and California labor law; current Worker’s
Compensation law and implications; grievance handling and preparation
and collective bargaining strategies, as well as develop a broad
understanding of the labor movement from its historical, cultural,
political, economic and social contexts.
