Course Descriptions

100 Logic in Critical Thinking and Writing
3 hours, 3 units

Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level W5 and R5.
This course is a study of the relationship of written and verbal communications and thinking with a focus on good reasoning and the impediments to its mastery. This course emphasizes the development of skills in logical processes, including familiarity with the more common fallacies and basic argumentative writing techniques. Attention is given to application of the critical principles to the practical problems of everyday life through written and verbal expression. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC. 

101 Symbolic Logic 3 hours, 3 units
Prerequisite: Mathematics 96 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level M50.
Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students having previous credit for Symbolic Logic.

The elements of symbolic logic, sentential calculus and quantification theory; identity, definite descriptions, natural deduction and structure of language. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

102A Introduction to Philosophy: Reality & Knowledge
3 hours, 3 units

Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with previous credit for Philosophy 101A.

A study of the aims, methods, types and problems of philosophy and philosophical inquiry. Discussions and readings relating to the nature of reality and problems of knowledge will be emphasized. Students are encouraged to engage in independent research, analysis and formulation. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

102B Introduction to Philosophy: Values
3 hours, 3 units

Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with previous credit in Philosophy 101B.

A study of the aims, methods, types and problems of philosophy and philosophical inquiry. Discussions and readings will focus on values and their place in an individual's daily life. Students are encouraged to engage in independent research, analysis and formulation. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/ univ.; UC. 

104A History of Western Philosophy 3 hours, 3 units
Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with previous credit in Philosophy 110A.

An historical survey of developing Western philosophical thought from pre-Socratic origins through the Medieval period. Considers representative thinkers of the major periods, their cultural milieu, and their attempts to resolve philosophical issues and problems, perennial as well as those of their respective eras. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

104B History of Western Philosophy 3 hours, 3 units

A continuation of an historical survey of developing Western philosophical thought from the Renaissance period through the 19th Century. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

106 Oriental Philosophy 3 hours, 3 units
Prerequisite: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
This is a general education course surveying oriental perspectives on the perennial philosophical questions relating to the nature of the universe, the status and meaning of man, and the qualities characterizing the good life. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

111 Philosophy in Literature 3 hours, 3 units
Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
This course is a general education course involving an examination and discussion of philosophical issues and themes as treated in various works of literature. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

125 Philosophy of Women in World Cultures
3 hours, 3 units

Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
This is an introduction and exploration of the concepts of womanhood and feminism in the mythic, classic, medieval, and major modern philosophical traditions. The images, roles, and beliefs about women found in the humanities will be explored with respect to their  impact and contemporary relevance. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

205 Critical Thinking and Writing in Philosophy
3 hours lecture, 3 units

Prerequisite: English 101 or 105 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W6 and R6
This critical thinking and writing seminar in Philosophy is designed to enhance the student's critical thinking, writing, and research skills in preparation for upper division academic activity. Special attention will be given to techniques and aids to research, reasoning, and writing together with the application of basic principles of deduction and induction. Attention will also be given to identifying and avoiding fallacies in reasoning. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/ univ.; UC.

290 Independent Study Hours by Arrangement; 1-3 units
Limitation on Enrollment: Must obtain an Add Code from instructor for registration.
Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.

For students who wish to study special problems. This course may be taken four times with different content for a maximum of six units. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC transfer limitations. See a counselor.

296 Individual Instruction in Philosophy
3 hours lab, 1 unit
Credit/No Credit Only

Limitation on Enrollment: Enrollment in an approved related course; Must obtain an Add Code from instructor for registration.
