100 Logic in Critical Thinking and Writing
3 hours, 3 units
Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade
of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level W5 and R5.
This course is a study of the relationship of written and verbal
communications and thinking with a focus on good reasoning and the
impediments to its mastery. This course emphasizes the development of
skills in logical processes, including familiarity with the more common
fallacies and basic argumentative writing techniques. Attention is given
to application of the critical principles to the practical problems of
everyday life through written and verbal expression. Transfer Credit: CSU

101 Symbolic Logic
3 hours, 3 units
Prerequisite: Mathematics 96 with a grade of
"C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level M50.
Limitation on Enrollment: This
course is not open to students having previous credit for Symbolic Logic.
The elements of symbolic logic, sentential calculus and quantification
theory; identity, definite descriptions, natural deduction and structure

102A Introduction to Philosophy: Reality & Knowledge

course is not open to students with previous credit for Philosophy 101A.
A study of the aims, methods, types and problems of philosophy and
philosophical inquiry. Discussions and readings relating to the nature of
reality and problems of knowledge will be emphasized. Students are
encouraged to engage in independent research, analysis and formulation.

102B Introduction to Philosophy: Values

A study of the aims, methods, types and problems of philosophy and

their place in an individual's daily life. Students are encouraged to

104A History of Western Philosophy

An historical survey of developing Western philosophical thought from
pre-Socratic origins through the Medieval period. Considers representative
thinkers of the major periods, their cultural milieu, and their attempts
to resolve philosophical issues and problems, perennial as well as those

104B History of Western Philosophy

A continuation of an historical survey of developing Western philosophical

This is a general education course surveying oriental perspectives on the
perennial philosophical questions relating to the nature of the universe,
the status and meaning of man, and the qualities characterizing the good

125 Philosophy of Women in World Cultures
3 hours, 3 units

This is an introduction and exploration of the concepts of womanhood and
feminism in the mythic, classic, medieval, and major modern philosophical
traditions. The images, roles, and beliefs about women found in the
humanities will be explored with respect to their impact and

205 Critical Thinking and Writing in Philosophy

This critical thinking and writing seminar in Philosophy is designed to
enhance the student's critical thinking, writing, and research skills in
preparation for upper division academic activity. Special attention will
be given to techniques and aids to research, reasoning, and writing
together with the application of basic principles of deduction and
induction. Attention will also be given to identifying and avoiding
