100 Art Orientation 3 hours, 3 units
A survey of the field of visual arts, including aesthetic approaches, philosophies, media, professional fields, regional and cultural contributions. Recommended for general education and Fine Arts majors. Illustrated lectures. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/ univ.; UC.

109 Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Art 3 hours, 3 units
Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with credit for Fine Arts 135.
A survey of major art trends in the Western World since the late 18th century. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

110 Art History: Prehistoric to Gothic 3 hours, 3 units
An introductory survey of the visual arts that are the most relevant to western civilization, from the prehistoric through the Gothic periods. Illustrated lectures. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/ univ.; UC.

111 Art History: Renaissance to Modern 3 hours, 3 units
An introductory survey of the visual arts from the Renaissance period to the 20th century. Illustrated lectures. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/ univ.; UC.

115 African Art 3 hours, 3 units
An introduction to the background, aesthetics, styles and ichnography of African art. Illustrated lectures. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC transfer limitations. See a counselor.

150A Design I 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
The elements and principles of visual design identified and applied to a series of basic two- dimensional problems, leading to appreciation and use of formal structure in art. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

Projects incorporate phonetic symbols and typography into visual design, exploring interrelationships between formal elements and symbolic content. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

151 Three Dimensional Design 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
Continuation of Fine Arts 150A with emphasis on direct application of visual design principles to three dimensional concepts involving a variety of media. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

155A Freehand Drawing I 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
A basic course developing the ability to perceive existing visual space relationships and to represent them with line and value. Transfer Credit: CSU and/ or private coll/univ.; UC.

155B Freehand Drawing II 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
A continuation of Fine Arts 155A, with an introduction of varied media. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

165A Composition in Painting I 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
Application of design principles to painting with particular attention to space organization and color structure. 185 Lettering 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
A basic course emphasizing freehand techniques of brush and pen lettering. Letter forms, styles, spacing and layout problems are presented. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.

193 Photography as Fine Art 2 hours lecture, 3 hours lab, 3 units
Grade Only

The application of photography techniques, traditional and experimental, is the basis in this course with concentration being on creative expression. Students are encouraged to combine photography with a variety of art media work and techniques which might include darkroom manipulation, collage, painting, hand coloring, assemblage, Polaroid transfer, electronic imaging, non-silver processes, and other mixed media techniques. Design and construction of hand-formed and wheel thrown ceramic objects, emphasizing form and surface enrichment, basic glaze mixture and application techniques. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

Continuation of Fine Arts 195A with advanced ceramic problems using both wheel and hand building techniques applying traditional and contemporary approaches. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

195C Ceramics III 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
Continuation of Fine Arts 195A/B. Ceramic problems adjusted to students individual interest and expressive direction, with further development of knowledge, skills and philosophy through individual creative projects. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

195D Porcelain Ceramics 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
Advance projects in both wheel and hand building techniques using porcelain (or white stoneware) and related porcelain glazes. Transfer Credit: CSU and/ or private coll/univ.; UC.

196 Clay and Glaze Technology 1.5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours lab, 3 units
Problems through class experiences of testing, calculating formulas and technical problems in clay, stains, engobes, and glazes ranging from simplistic formulation to compounding molecular formulas. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.

270 Work Experience Hours by Arrangement; 1-4 units
Grade Only

Limitation on Enrollment: Must obtain an Add Code from Work Experience Coordinator for registration.
A program of on-the-job learning experiences for students employed in a job related to their major. The combined maximum credit for all work experience courses from all disciplines may not exceed 16 units. To receive credit a student must complete a minimum of seven units during the semester, including work experience. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.

290 Independent Study Hours by Arrangement; 1-3 units
Limitation on Enrollment: Must obtain an Add Code from instructor for registration.
Open only to those students who have exhausted departmental offerings in their areas of emphasis. This course may be taken four times with different content for a maximum of six units. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC transfer limitations. See a counselor.
