100 Introduction to Music 3 hours, 3 units
Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or
equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
This is a survey course designed to develop listening perception through
lectures, recordings, films and concerts. The conceptual and stylistic
differences in music from various periods and cultures will be examined
through discussion of the elements of music as well as through discussions
of ethnic, jazz, vocal instrumental and 20th century music. This course is
designed to support students in all majors who are interested in
satisfying the general education requirements for Arts and Humanities.

108 The World of Commercial Music 3 hours, 3 units
A comprehensive survey of the commercial music field with consideration of
historical, cultural, and technological influences. The course covers the
current styles of music being performed, composing/arranging, recording,
songwriting and business/legal information. Emphasis is on preparing the
student to make informed decisions concerning career direction and
employment in the commercial music field. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or

110 Music for Elementary School Teachers
2.5 hours lecture, 1.5 hours

A comprehensive study of rhythmic and melodic instruments used in the
elementary classroom. Development of keyboard and vocal facilities.

111 Jazz History and Development 3 hours, 3 units

An introduction to jazz; its historical background and its development in
the United States. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private coll/univ.; UC.
115A Elementary Piano 0.5 hour lecture, 1.5 hours lab, 1 unit

equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.
Course introduces basic skills to music majors whose theoretical and
practical keyboard skills are deficient, and to non-music majors who have
had little or no experience at the piano. Course focuses on developing
repertoire, sight-reading, transposition, harmonization, creative

115B Elementary Piano 0.5 hour lecture, 1.5 hours lab, 1 unit
Advisory: Music 115A with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent.
Continuation of Music 115A with emphasis on more advanced techniques
employed in repertoire development, sight reading, transposition,
harmonization, creative composition, and modulation techniques. Complex
rhythmic and melodic skills are explored. Open to music majors with

115C Intermediate Piano 0.5 hour lecture, 1.5 hours lab, 1 unit
Advisory: Music 115B with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent.
Study of practical and theoretical keyboard techniques for music majors,
credential applications, and non music majors with comparable skills.
Course focuses on advanced skill development of repertoire, sight reading,
transposition, harmonization, creative composition and modulation

120A Beginning Voice Class 1 hour lecture, 2 hours lab, 1.5 units
For beginners in voice. Deals with the development of proper voice
production. Includes the problems of breath control, resonance,
articulation and vowel formation. Instruction in the development of the
individual voice. Solo performances of simple songs in class. Transfer

120B Intermediate Voice Class 1 hour lecture,
2 hours lab, 1.5 units
For intermediates in voice. Deals with the development of proper voice
production. Includes the problems of breath control, resonance,
articulation and vowel formation, with emphasis on interpretation and
repertoire. Instruction in the development of the individual voice. A

130A College Chorus I 1 hour lecture, 2 hours lab,
1.5 units
Study and performance of a wide range of choral music from the Renaissance
period to the present day. Some previous choral experience and music
reading skills are highly recommended. Attendance at rehearsals and

Continuation of Music 130A. Study and performance of a wide range of

150A Basic Musicianship 3 hours, 3 units
This course is designed for music majors as well as non music majors. It
enables the student to develop perceptions in sight and sound as related
to the symbols of rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic notation. It will also
enable the student to develop skill in writing, major, minor, and
chromatic scales, chord construction and intervals; and to identify terms
used to indicate tempo and dynamics. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or

150B Basic Musicianship 3 hours, 3 units
Continuation of Music 150A with emphasis on practical problems of
notation, chord structure and progression, and ear training. Transfer

165 Jazz Keyboard 1.5 hours lecture, 1.5 hours lab,
2 units
Designed for music majors and non-music majors interested in developing
practical and theoretical skills in playing, writing, and listening to
jazz chord patterns employed in developing jazz forms; blue notes,
syncopated rhythmic patterns, blues chord progressions, ragtime forms,
gospel music influences, calypso rhythms, and Latin American, Spanish,
African and American influences representing a multitude of international
resources and musical personalities. Transfer Credit: CSU and/or private

190 The Electronic Music Studio 2.5 hours lecture,

units

This course teaches the basic skills needed for the application of
electronic, recording, and computer music equipment in the studio.
Students will be creating original work as a measure of their abilities.
This course is a prerequisite to future work in the studio. Transfer

A comprehensive study of the techniques and literature of improvisation
with an emphasis of jazz improvisation and interpretation. Analysis and
practical application of chord progressions used in jazz. Transfer

252 Concert Jazz Band 3-9 hours lab, 1-3 units
Limitation on Enrollment: Audition/Try Out
A selected group of limited membership devoted to the preparation and
performance of the best contemporary jazz and stage band literature.
Designed to meet the needs of the student desiring to enter the field of
professional stage band work, but open to qualified students of any
department of the college. The group gives public concerts and supplies
music for college functions. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is

290 Independent Study Hours by Arrangement; 1-3 units
Limitation on Enrollment: Must obtain an Add Code from instructor for
registration.
Course is designed to meet individual needs or interests of students who
wish to work on special projects in music. Special projects include all
aspects of music and may involve topics which are broad in scope along
with those that are narrow in scope. Special projects may include an
unlimited number of diversified phases of the music curricula. This course
may be taken four times with different content for a maximum of six
