Social Work

Program Description

Social work is an applied behavioral science that emphasizes the application of behavioral science principles in a variety of cultural contexts. Although it is a behavioral science, its application typically involves personal and/or cultural philosophical beliefs or values. Social Work students are expected to be able to think critically and scientifically about behavior, and be able to apply the principles of the behavioral sciences, and have an understanding of the role of values in cultural settings. As a profession, social work focuses on methods to improve the quality of life for people by working with many different kinds of social groups.

Program Emphasis
The social work program has two primary goals. The first is to provide the basic science courses that are foundations for further understanding of other courses in social work and related fields as well as preparation for transfer to other institutions for further study. The second goal is to provide courses that may include additional information regarding the Behavioral Sciences that are of general interest to community college students, or are applications of Behavioral Science principles.
