City College is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). Accreditation is a comprehensive process for evaluating and certifying the quality of education and is designed to assure students and the greater public that an educational institution meets or exceeds standards of good practice recognized by the educational community. Accreditation assures that college course credits, associate degrees, and occupational certificates will be recognized by other colleges and universities, guaranteeing that academic work may be transferred in pursuit of advanced degrees. Accreditation also assures the business community that the academic work a student completes best prepares her/him for employment in the workplace.

Accreditation standards reflect standards of good practice. The standards were developed by professional peers (faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the public) and reflect minimum conditions of quality and service for accredited institutions. Maintaining an accredited status is a collective responsibility of all members of the San Diego City College community.

Every seven years, San Diego City College undertakes a comprehensive self-study of all programs and services measured against a defined set of accreditation standards adopted by WASC-ACCJC. Following the self-study, the accrediting commission assigns a team of peer evaluators the task of conducting a multi-day visit to the college, where documentary evidence, interviews of faculty, staff, and students, observation of classes and support service programs is undertaken. This team’s task is to certify that the college meets all standards of good practice and to develop a comprehensive report and recommendation for consideration by the accrediting commission. In January, 2011, the accrediting commission will act on the team’s recommendation regarding the reaffirmation of City College’s accreditation status for the next seven years.

The intent of this website is to provide the public information on our accreditation progress reports, our planning agendas related to the accreditation standards, and our efforts toward fully meeting the current accreditation standards. The standards focus on the significance of student learning outcomes and the college's collective responsibility to define and assess student learning by creating a culture of evidence focused on continuous improvement of teaching and learning.

Positive student learning outcomes are the primary goal of San Diego City College. As a student-centered institution, we pride ourselves at putting students at the center of all we do. We are committed to quality and continuous improvement, and welcome the accreditation process as a vital element of our ongoing improvement efforts.


San Diego City College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. The college is accredited by the Office of Private Postsecondary Education for the training of veterans as well as by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Immigration Service for international student education. Courses paralleling university level work are accepted by the University of California, California State University, and by other universities and colleges. Persons interested in the institution’s accreditation and program approvals may review documents describing these activities in the President’s Office and on this website. For those interested in viewing documents in the President’s Office, they will be available for such review at a mutually convenient time during regular business hours, and an appropriate interpretation of their contents will be provided if requested.

The college provides lower division and general education courses that lead to certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to a four-year college or university; career technical education programs that meet specific industry needs, upgrade the employment skills of students and fulfill licensing requirements of the state of California as well as contribute to the economic development of our region; basic skills instruction to assist all students in meeting their educational goals; and essential student support services for all students.
