Knights Win in 5
Over Grossmont
The Knights ended a four-match
losing streak by defeating Grossmont, 3-2 (32-30, 30-25, 29-31,
27-30, 15-11), on Wednesday night.
After winning the first two games,
the Knights looked as though they were closing in on the sweep
with a 25-20 lead in the third game, but Grossmont went on an
11-4 run to win 31-29. The momentum from that comeback carried
them in the next game as they won 30-27, but the Knights
recovered to win the fifth game, 15-11.
In that game, the teams were even
at 9-9, but City closed it out with a 6-2 run. During that run,
the Knights' Skylar del Sol recorded four of his 26 kills. He
also recorded 10 defensive digs during the match.
Steve Rindfleisch had a
match-high 28 kills to go with seven digs and five service aces.
3/9/10 - Baseball
Herrera Dominant
in 5-1 Win Over Grossmont
Sophomore right-hander Hunter
Herrera (4-0) allowed only one run on three hits and struck out
a season-high 12 batters as the Knights (10-3, 3-2 PCAC)
defeated Grossmont, 5-1.
Herrera did not allow a hit until the sixth inning when
Grossmont shortstop Jake Villalobos' ground ball caromed off
third base and did not allow Knights' third baseman Michael
Sandoval enough time to make a play. The Griffins threatened in
the inning with runners on second and third base, but Herrera
held them off and kept them scoreless.
The Knights were also held
without a run for the first five innings by Grossmont
right-hander Hunter Brown, but City finally broke the scoreless
tie in the sixth inning on an RBI double by sophomore left
fielder Chuck Matthey.
SDCC then broke the game open in
the seventh inning by scoring four runs to go ahead, 5-0.
Shortstop Louis Cazares started a two-out rally by reaching base
on an error. First baseman then homered to the deepest part of
the park in center field. It was his second home run in as many
games and his fourth overall. Later in the inning, Sandoval
scored on an error and catcher Corey Vasquez came home on a wild
pitch.
Left-hander Adam Bileckyj
relieved Herrera in the ninth inning and retired all three
batters he faced.
Sandoval went 2-for-4 with two
runs and Matthey went 3-for-3 with one RBI.
The SDCC softball team, in their
second of five straight road games, defeated Imperial Valley,
8-0, on Friday afternoon.
Alyssa Ortega led the team going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Leona Reyna went 3-for-5, including a double, with three RBI.
Shaakirah Ramsom went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and Courtney
Gahan went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.
Hannah Shafer struck out five and
allowed only one hit in the shutout performance.

Knights Suffer
Tough 4-3 Loss in 10th Inning to Mesa
The Knights were one out away from
winning their third straight conference game, but a game-tying
two-run home run by San Diego Mesa's Jimmy Filter in the ninth
inning changed the outcome. Mesa came back to win, 4-3, in the
10th inning.
SDCC scored
the first two runs of the game. In the second inning, Julian
Velazco scored on a misplay by right fielder Kyle Ginter after
Mike Sandoval's single. In the third inning, Phil Creecy hit his
third home run of the season when he belted one over the left
field fence.
Mesa cut City's lead in half with
a run in the fifth inning, but the Knights got it back with a
run in the sixth. Sophomore Chuck Matthey hit an RBI double down
the the right field line to bring in Corey Vasquez for the 3-1
lead.
Freshman right-hander Nick Geraci
came into the game in the seventh innning and survived a threat
by Mesa. Geraci loaded the bases with two out, but stuck out
Lance McFeely to end the inning.
In the ninth inning, Geraci got
the first two batters out, but gave up a single to Myles Dempsey
to keep the inning alive. Then Filter came up and hit the
game-tying two-run home run to left field. Geraci avoided any
more damage by striking out the next batter.
After the Knights were unable to
score in the bottom of the ninth, Mesa took a 4-3 lead in the
10th on what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single by
Alejandro Galvan.

Student-Athletes
Rally
Against Budget Cuts
A large contingent of SDCC
student-athletes from several sports represented the Athletics
Department at the student rally on Sept. 9 to protest California budget
cuts and class reductions.
Led by Dean Kathy McGinnis and their respective coaches, the
student-athletes, all wearing black T-shirts with the 'Knights'
logo, gathered at the Harry West Gymnasium and walked together
to the corner of Park Blvd. and A Street where the rally was
being held.
