Although the SDCC women's
badminton team were not able to win a fourth straight
state championship, the Knights still found success in
the 2009 season.
The Knights finished
second (6-2) in the Orange Empire Conference to Irvine
Valley, the eventual state champs. The two losses were
the first two for the Knights since the 2005 season.
They had gone 34-0 from 2006 to 2008 and won the first
three matches of the '09 season before losing to Irvine
Valley on March 4.
Three Knights qualified
for the CCCAA State Championships, held at Irvine Valley
College from May 8-9. YingJing You, Jeannie Emathinger,
and Shirley Barrios qualified in singles and the team of
You and Emathinger qualified in doubles. All three
Knights were also named to the the All-OEC First Team.
You made it to the
quarterfinals in singles competition, Barrios made it to
the finals of the consolation bracket and Emathinger was
defeated in the second round.
In doubles competition,
the You/Emathinger duo recovered from a second round
loss and went on to win the consolation bracket.
