by Mesa, 3-0
The
men's soccer team was defeated by rival Mesa, 3-0, on Friday

nearly tied the game on a free kick, but the ball was a few
inches too high as it caromed off the crossbar. Then in the 42nd
minute, Mesa's Thiago Batista headed in a pass from Jose LeDesma.
In the second half, Ortega was
robbed of two scoring opportunities, one by Mesa's goalkeeper
who saved the shot with an outstretched hand and the other by a

Knights Tie
Southwestern, 0-0
The
SDCC men's soccer team tied the first place Southwestern
Jaguars, 0-0, on Wednesday.
In the first half, Southwestern came
out strong against the Knights' defense and created several
scoring opportunities, but goalkeeper Miguel Sepulveda put
himself in the right places at the right times, saving all five
of the Jaguars shots on goal.
SDCC's offense was much more in
tune in the second half as the Knights attacked more frequently
and nearly ended the scoreless tie on two occasions.
In the 68th minute, the Knights'
Bryant Romero found himself with a clear shot in front of the
net, but the Jaguars' goalkeeper was able to make the stop. In
the 87th minute, after receiving a pass from Andrew Ortega, Pier
Sarabia had only the goalkeeper to beat, but shot the ball a
couple feet wide of the goal post.
The Knights have now gone five
straight games without losing. They have won three of those five
games.

Knights Handle
Cuyamaca, 5-0
The
SDCC men's soccer team handed Cuyamaca its first loss in
PCC play with a 5-0 shutout. It was also the Knights'
second straight victory.
Andrew Ortega led the way
offensively for the Knights with a hat trick, but the
first goal of the game came off Ortega's free kick. In
the 43rd minute, Ortega sent in a free kick that found
Oscar Perez who put it past Cuyamaca's goalkeeper.
In the 49th minute,
Oliver Magdaleno found an open Leonardo Perez for the
Knights' second goal of the match. Six minutes later,
the Knights were awarded a penalty kick after Cuyamaca's
goalkeeper brought down Magdaleno inside the box. The
goalkeeper was ejected after being given a red card.
Ortega then beat the substitute goalkeeper for the first
of his three goals.
In the 68th minute, Pier
Sarabia saved the ball from going outside of the goal
line by quickly chasing it down and then keeping his
balance long enough to blindly find Ortega in front of
the net for the goal. Ortega then knocked in his third
goal of the game in the waning minutes of the match.
The Knights improved to
6-10-2 overall and 3-3-1 in PCC play. It was the third

conference home opener.
The Knights dominated
possession in the first half, but only managed three

on the Knights early in the second half, but SDCC
goalkeeper Miguel Sepulveda came up big as he saved all
four attempts by MiraCosta in the first five minutes.
The Knights finally broke

In the 76th minute, Oscar
Perez took the ball near midfield seconds after checking
into the game and dribbled all the way to the front of
the net and beat MiraCosta's goalkeeper with a low shot

dribbled towards the right edge of the box where he

dribble to his left then fired a shot that went in the
bottom left corner of the goal.
The Knights held strong
defensively in the second half, but were fortunate as
East L.A. hit the crossbar on three different occasions.
9/3/08 Knights
Lose to Pasadena, 4-1
The
SDCC men's soccer team held a 1-0 lead for most of the
match, but could not stop Pasadena's attack in the
second half as they allowed four unanswered goals.
The Knights jumped out to an
early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Tony Melendez
passed a ball from near midfield to an open Justin Picou
who headed it into the far corner of the goal. The
Knights' defense held strong the remainder of the first
half even though they allowed five corner kicks and four
shots on goal, three of which were saved by SDCC
goalkeeper Juan Galicia.
The Knights continued to
control the game for much of the second half, but
Pasadena was able to even the score in the 65th minute
as Gabriel Chavarria kicked in a cross from teammate
Sargis Agaronian. Three minutes later, Chavarria stuck
again with another goal off a cross. Pasadena midfielder
Alex De Leon extended the lead to 3-1 after lobbing in a
goal over Galicia's outstretched body.
SDCC had two good scoring
chances in the final minutes of the game, but Pasadena's
goalkeeper was able to stop shots from Picou and Oliver
Magdaleno.
