Knights Stay
Undefeated in PCAC With 3-1 Victory |
|
The men's soccer team defeated PCAC-rival
San Diego Mesa, 3-1, on Friday and improved to 7-3-4 overall and
3-0-2 in the PCAC. The
Knights came out aggressive on offense as they looked to get an
early lead and it paid off in the 25th minute. Knights'
sophomore forward Justin Picou drew a foul in the penalty area
after a quality give-and-go between he and sophomore Oliver
Magdaleno. Freshman captain Devin Garcia beat Mesa's goalkeeper
on the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead.
City went ahead 2-0 in the 35th
minute on an impressive header by freshman midfielder Grant Da
Silva. Leonardo Perez took a free kick from the right side after
a foul and sent in a perfect ball to Da Silva who then headed it
in on the left side.
Mesa cut the lead in half after a
48th minute goal from Thiago Batista. He took a free kick from
30 yards out that hit the bottom left corner of the net.
The Knights, however, would get
an insurance goal in the 60th minute as Perez, who had a strong
performance throughout, once again set up a teammate for a
header off a free kick. This time it was Picou who was the
recipient of Perez' accurate pass.
The Knights held off the
Olympians the rest of the way and got the important victory they
needed as they stayed in second place in conference, two points
behind Palomar.

Late Goal Gets
City a 3-3 Tie Against Cuyamaca |
|
For the second straight game, the
Knights jumped out on top with an early goal, but eventually had
to come from behind to secure a 3-3 tie at home against Cuyamaca
on Wednesday afternoon. In
the previous match, sophomore forward Justin Picou got things
started quickly with a goal in the third minute as the Knights
went on to defeat Palomar, 6-1. On Wednesday, he repeated the
act as he knocked in the Knights' first goal in the third
minute. Cuyamaca's goalkeeper miskicked a clearance and Picou
was there to head in the gift.
Four minutes later, Picou was
fouled inside the 18-yard box and the Knights were awarded a
penalty kick which team captain Devin Garcia knocked it.
It looked as though it might be another rout by the Knights, but
Cuyamaca got back into the match as Cory Giorgi put in a penalty
kick they were awarded in the 14th minute after a foul in the
18-yard box.
In the second half, Cuyamaca
increased its intensity on offense and was awarded a second
penalty kick in the 65th minute following a foul by Knights'
defender Carlos Soria. Dominic Sotriano put it in to tie the
match, 2-2. Five minutes later, Cuyamaca got the go-ahead
goal after Tanner Orness blasted in a one-timer off a cross from
teammate Satriano.
Cuyamaca's lead did not last long
as the Knights regained their rhythm on the offensive end and
tied the match in the 80th minute. Garcia found the top left
corner of the goal after one-timing a pass from freshman
defender Xavier Rodriguez.
The Knights were intent on
breaking the tie in the final minutes as they pushed everyone
forward and forced three corner kicks, but came up empty and had
to settle for the 3-3 result.

Knights Knock Off
Palomar, 6-1 |
|
The SDCC men's soccer team looked
impressive in their first conference match of the season as they
defeated Palomar, 6-1, to improve to 5-3-2 on the season.
It did not take long for the Knights
to get on the board as they scored their first goal in the third
minute off a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Leonardo Perez
set up sophomore Justin Picou for an easy header near the left
post for the goal.
In the 29th minute, freshman
Heriberto Romero sent a cross pass through the 18-yard box to
sophomore Oliver Magdaleno who knocked in the ball as he slid
towards the goal.
The Knights got off to an even
quicker start in the second half as they went ahead 3-0 in the
46th minute. After a defensive misplay by Palomar, Leonardo
Perez found himself open and blasted in a shot from 25 yards
out.
The Palomar Comets responded by
increasing their offensive pressure and got a goal in the 56th
minute. They had more opportunities in the following minutes,
but could not find another score.
In the 62nd minute, the Knights
took complete control of the match as Picou scored his second of
the game off a rebound. Perez took a shot in the 18-yard box
that was saved by Palomar's goalkeeper, but bounced over to
Picou who gently lobbed it over the goalkeeper's outstretched
hands for the goal.
Devin Garcia and Magdaleno scored
the last two goals of the match for the Knights. Garcia found
himself on a breakaway and hit the top right corner of the goal
in the 76th minute. A couple minutes later, Magdaleno hit a
