Rangel Pitches No-Hitter, Knights Win
Everything seemed to go right for Erika Rangel on her birthday as she pitched a no-hitter and drove in all three runs for the Knights in a 3-0 victory over Rio Hondo on April 7.

In the circle, Rangel faced only 21 batters throughout the game. She allowed only two of them to reach base on walks, but the defense behind her made sure neither scored. One of the Rio Hondo players to reach base was caught stealing and the other was put out on a double play.

Rangel also provided the spark offensively to lead the Knights to victory. She hit a 2-run home run in the first inning, and in the third inning, drove in Alexis Coronado with a single. Coronado had led off the inning with a triple. Rangel sacrifice bunted and walked in her final two at-bats.

Catcher Mary Martinez was 2-for-3 on the day as was Alexis Coronado. The Knights totaled eight hits.

Knights Win Golden West Tourney

The SDCC softball team won five of six games in a three day span last weekend to win the 31st Annual Golden West Tournament.

In pool play, the Knights dispatched College of the Desert, 12-2. Pitcher Natalie Garrett struck out six and also went 2-for-2. Nadia Rangel went 4-for-4 with two RBI. In the second game, SDCC beat Fullerton, 4-1, and held a shutout until the seventh inning. Erika Rangel went 2-for-3 with a 2-run homerun. Maryelena Martinez and Yanitzia Jimenez each drove in one run.

The Knights lost the next game to El Camino, 5-2, but won their pool and advanced to the single elimination round. In the first game of that round, they matched up with Santa Barbara and beat them 5-3. The Knights totaled 11 hits with Garrett going 3-for-3, Alexis Coronado going 3-for-4, and Lupe Balajadia going 2-for-3.

In the semi-final, the Knights defeated the host, Golden West, 8-4. Coronado went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Garrett went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Martinez went 2-for-4 with two RBI as well.

SDCC met PCC foe Palomar in the championship game of the tournament and defeated them, 2-1. Garrett pitched a five-hitter and struck out seven. The Palomar Comets' only run was scored on a two out solo homerun in the first inning. The Knights answered with a first inning run of their own. Coronado hit a one out double and then came home to score after Garrett's groundout led to a bad throw by the Comets' first baseman. Palomar threatened in the fourth inning with a lead-off triple, but Garrett struck out the next two batters and forced a pop-up to end the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Nadia Rangel led-off with a single that was followed by a sacrifice bunt by Martinez. Amanda Wilson then smoked a single up the middle to score Rangel in what would end up being the game-winning RBI. Palomar loaded the bases with only one out in the sixth inning, but Garrett struck out the next batter, looking, and the following batter hit a line drive to shortstop Coronado's glove and she easily touched second base for the third out. In the seventh, Palomar was retired in order to end the game.

Garrett was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. On the pitching side she had a 1.84 ERA and 16 strikeouts. She batted .474 with two doubles, six RBI, and five runs scored.

Christina Duong was named Most Valuable Pitcher for winning all three games she pitched, including the semi-final game.

Coronado was selected to the All-Tournament Team with a batting average of .450, three doubles, one triple, eight runs scored, and two stolen bases.

Knights Take 2 Over Weekend
In the final tune-up before conference play, the Knights played a double-header on Saturday (Feb. 23) and came away victorious in both games.

In the first game of the day, the Knights defeated Glendale, 3-2. SDCC scored its first run in the second inning after Amanda Wilson forced an error on Glendale's shortstop that scored Nadia Rangel. Rangel had reached base on a one-out single then moved to second base on a steal.

In the third inning, Ashia Lopez led-off with a single and was then bunted over to second base by Lupe Balajadia. Erika Rangel reached base on a walk and Natalie Garrett followed with a two-out double to left-center field to score both Lopez and Rangel. That would be enough as the Knights held off Glendale the rest of the way.
Christina Duong pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts.

The Knights defeated Ventura College, 8-0, in the second game of the double-header. Erika Rangel pitched a one-hit shutout and went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Garrett went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Wilson went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Veronica Ollier went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base. Alexis Coronado was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The Knights had a total of 13 hits.
