Knights
Finish 3rd in PCC, Brown & Walker Qualify For Regionals |
|
The 2009 season was the most
successful under Head Coach Brandon Lupian. He led the
men's tennis team to a 10-8 overall record and a 6-4 PCC
record, good for third place.
Lupian, in his third season
at SDCC, has quickly rebuilt the program into what is
sure to be a force in the coming years. The 10 wins in
2009 were more than in the last two seasons combined.
The Knights won five matches in 2007 and three in 2008.
At the Pacific Coast
Conference tournament held at the Barnes Center from
April 16-18, Deo Brown and Jeff Walker both advanced to
the semifinals in singles action. Although they lost
their matches, both qualified for the Southern
California Regionals beginning April 30.
Brown, who was at the No. 1
singles position for the Knights all season, finished
with a record of 11-6. Walker improved throughout the
season as he moved up from the No. 4 spot in singles to
No. 2 after the first five matches. He compiled an
overall record of 7-8. In doubles, Walker and Chris Sua
finished with a 9-8 record.

Brandon
Lupian is in his third year as Head Coach of the men's tennis
program at SDCC. Lupian, a product of the
community college system, competed at Southwestern College where
he was a two-time All-PCC selection. Brandon then moved on to
play at U.S. International University while
earning his B.A. in Sociology in 2003.
Lupian was the Head Boy's and Girl's
Tennis Coach at Otay Ranch High School where the Boys won the
South Bay League in 2004, 2005 and 2006. His Girl's team won the
South Bay League championship in 2005.
Lupian
also served as the Men's Assistant Tennis Coach at Southwestern
College for the past three years. Brandon also volunteers some of his time to
help the Chula Vista High School basketball program.
Lupian has roots to City
College through his father, Lazaro (Larry) Lupian, who competed
in tennis here under Coach Bob Bacon during the "glory days" of
SDCC Athletics. His aunt and uncle both played professional
tennis.
Coach Lupian's philosophy: "Never
give up, play hard, and have FUN!" |
