The
San Diego City College women’s tennis team is under the direction of
Gretchen Magers who brings over 30 years of tennis experience to the
program.Magers, a former world class
touring professional who has played in 19 Wimbledon tournaments and 15
U.S. Opens, started her career at the age of 11 and still competes in
the 35 & over events at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. She has also
captained the U.S. team at the ITF World Championships in Durban, South
Africa.
Magers began teaching tennis at Fairbanks Ranch
Country Club in 1992 after retiring from the tennis tour. From 1992-96,
she served as the International Tennis Director for the Special
Olympics. There, she assisted in the 1995 World Games and oversaw the
rules committee.
In 1993-94, Magers was an assistant coach for the
women's tennis team at San Diego State. She then moved on to become the
head coach of the girl's tennis team at Our Lady of Peace High School
from 1996-98.
In addition to coaching at SDCC, Magers also
promotes beach tennis in San Diego County as President of the San Diego
Beach Tennis Association. Magers has also been a tennis professional at
the Peninsula Tennis Club in Ocean Beach, Calif. for the last 13 years.
Magers was a top 20 singles player and winner of
three pro singles and six doubles titles. She was a quarterfinalist at
the U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon. She was a 4-time All-American
at Trinity University and NCAA doubles champion. Magers has also been
World Junior champion in 1982, Pan American Games gold medalist, and
U.S. Olympic Team member in 1984.

San Diego City College offers a great environment
to play tennis year round. As a member of the San Diego Community
College District, San Diego City College is a part of the second largest
community college system in the State of California. With diverse
programs and transfer agreements with the University of California and
California State University systems, San Diego City College provides a
variety of academic options for student/athletes. There are many
advantages to attending a community college the first two years, one of
which is financial as it is significantly less expensive. We will assist
in directing you to the financial aid options available.
