Message From the President:
I started at City College as a returning student in
1989. I started as an hourly the same year. When I was forty I walked
across the stage at the Organ Pavilion and got my associate’s degree. In
the past seventeen years I have been a City Times writer and editor, a
classified senator, a mentor, a tutor, a City Works contributor and
student and staff editor, all while working full-time in the duplicating
department. City College is very important to me. The work that we do as
classified staff of this community is important work. When Desiree asked
if I would be willing to run as president of the classified senate I had
mixed feelings. I wanted to help continue what she and the senate had
started by increasing our participation in the campus community and at the
district after a dormant period. As a member of the accreditation
standard that dealt with governance and leadership, I had spoken with
classified people about their concerns with our place in this organization
and shared governance being shaky, at best. The Institutional Assessment
Committee of which I am a member is working with faculty and beginning to
work with staff on how to look at what we do within our area of expertise
and see what we do, how we are doing, what else we might try to accomplish
that task or duty in the most effective way, and how that new approach
works. I knew if elected, I would have work to do. I also knew that I
would continue to encourage staff, including our senators, to participate
in important committee work on campus to both give classified input and
help keep each other informed of the larger picture of which our work is
an essential part. We all get a chance at coming up to bat. Thanks for
mine, and I offer you yours. The classified executive board is open to
all input, suggestions and offers of help from you. It’s a team effort.
