On line tutors are scheduled for particular hours. If you have a question during times they are not scheduled, you may use the Q AND A CENTER on the right side of the main window. Click ASK A QUESTION and type in the question you have. When the tutor is able to answer it, you will be notified and you may go back to the Q AND A CENTER and RETRIEVE ANSWER.
During scheduled hours, tutors will be available to help answer your questions. It would be helpful if you have your questions prepared before entering online tutoring so the tutors can focus on the areas with which you need assistance.
To enter into a live tutorial session, click START LIVE CLASS.
This will bring up the WHITE BOARD
On the White Board, main functions are on the left menu bar, primary white board is centered, and the list of users is on the right menu bar. At the bottom is the chat menu.
On the Left menu bar, typing and editing functions are available
Use DETACH in the bottom right corner to separate User list and Chat bar to a separate, resizable window
Hand is a function students can use to tell lead tutors they have a question
“W” stands for white board
“C” stands for Chat
Green “checks” on “W” and “C” allow you access to those functions.
If there is a red “X” in the “W” and “C” boxes beside a student’s name, they cannot access those functions
Click on a student or the lead tutor so they are highlighted and private chat to speak only to that student or the lead tutor.
When you have a question, use the HAND function. A hand will appear on the screen beside your name. The lead tutor will click on it and make it disappear when he/she is ready to work with you.
Click “Dismiss” to remove user list from the menu bar. (Go to menu bar at top, USERS, and USERLIST to get the list back on the screen
Menu functions are mostly understandable.
You may ask questions using either the white board or the chat bar. The white board can act as your paper, so you can do whatever diagrams you need.
NetTutor allows for cutting and pasting from word processing.
To paste, select text from word processing document and copy it.
In NetTutor's whiteboard, go to EDIT, and PASTE TEXT. A second window will come up so you can paste.
There are no menu functions here, so press CONTROL + V to paste text in window.
Text wrap is not an automatic function in this program. When you have pasted your text to the white board, go to the bottom right hand corner of the window where there are several boxes. The middle of the three is a number, which should be set at 75. To the left of this is the WORDWRAP box. Click on this to wordwrap your pasted text. When you are finished, click OK. This will take you back to the white board. Click once on the white board to insert your text so that both you and the tutor can work with it.
Uploading Papers
If you wish a tutor to look over a paper and discuss it, please feel free to use the PAPER CENTER and the upload paper feature. Keep in mind, the tutor will only work with you and your paper together in the Live Class Room. Let the tutor know you wish to discuss your paper on-line.
Once the tutor confirms he/she is ready to work on the paper, you will need to upload it through the Paper Center.
Students have had difficulty using the Paper Center’s upload feature. If you experience problems uploading a paper in the Paper Center, you should e-mail your essay to the following address:
onlineenglishtutor@gmail.com
The tutor will then access it and bring it in to NetTutor for discussion
