Who comes to the English Center?

All City College and ECC students are welcome! It is useful to talk about your writing, reading, and speaking and listening assignments and to get some feedback. Bring in any kind of writing assignment for any class or any other writing project, such as your resume, cover letter, and application essay.

When should I come to the English Center?

Come before you start a paper to discuss the topic.
Come with a draft you are working on.
Do not come with a finished draft that's due soon. You won't be able to make significant changes that will occur to you after talking with a tutor.

When is the best time to come into the center?

When ever the The English Center is open! Check the side-bar for this semester's schedule!

Will the English Center proofread papers?

We will not proofread a paper for you. Our goal is to help you strengthen and become confident in your own skills as a writer. If we proofread your paper for you, that would make us better editors, but it would not help you become a better writer. We will help YOU learn how to be a better proofreader.

What happens in a tutorial?

Usually you come in with a question, a frustration, or just to get feedback.  It is best to know specifically what you want to work on when you come in, and it is also a good idea to bring in the prompt given to you by your instructor. Be aware that we may read all or part of your paper. Our tutors will answer any questions you have or talk with you about strategies you can use in your assignments. We offer personal help with planning, revising, and any other aspect of your writing. We don't write papers for you, but we help you write better ones.

What should I do to make my time in the English Center the most productive?

Come in with some definite questions. If possible, bring a writing sample or a draft of what you are working on so that we can meet your specific needs. Be sure to have your class syllabus, any comments from your instructor, the assignment prompt or question, and any necessary textbooks.

Does the English Center notify instructors when you come in for a tutorial?

When students work with a tutor, they fill out a confirmation slip that details what happened in the session. The Center keeps a copy, you get a copy, and the instructor gets a copy. Most instructors appreciate these notes--and many give extra points for motivation and effort.

Is tutoring offered online?
