Placement
Before students enroll in classes, they must take a placement test to determine which level is most appropriate. There are two types of placement tests at City College. One is designed for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and the other is designed for native and native-like speakers of English. Students whose first or primary language is not English may find the ESOL Placement Test most appropriate. Students should talk with a counselor in the
Counseling Office to determine which test to take and to make an appointment.
After a student is placed in a level, he/she can enroll in the appropriate courses. Students must complete all courses with a passing grade ("C" or higher) at the level in which they placed before moving to the next level. After students successfully complete the final ESOL level (40), they will be prepared to take English courses one level below transfer (English 51 and 56).
