Pneumatically Powered Bicycle Wins 1st Place for City College students at the WESTEC 2002 Manufacturing Challenge Who/What: San Diego City College manufacturing technology students won first prize in the Community College division of the WESTEC 2002 Manufacturing Challenge for the design, prototyping, and machining of a pneumatic powered drive for a bicycle. |

San Diego City College students also won first place last year at WESTEC 2001
with their Manipulator (robotic gripper device) Deep Sea Submersible entrant. When/Where: Awarded on Monday, March 18th at the Los Angeles Convention Center at WESTEC 2002. The Western States Exposition and Conference is the largest annual metalworking and manufacturing exposition of its kind in North America. How: Seventeen students in City College’s Manufacturing Technology-Automated Equipment Technician program developed, designed and manufactured a prototype pneumatic drive for a bicycle. The environmentally friendly bicycle reaches speeds of 4 mph. City College’s RAPID prototyping lab uses ordinary cornstarch to create three-dimensional models from computer aided design (CAD) data, saving significant hours and costs in cutting metal during the design improvement process. The final design was then machined and installed on the bike. Engineering professionals evaluated and judged the contest entrants, including ITT Technical Institute. ITT won second prize for its voice-operated wheel chair.
