At Calif. Colleges, Enrollments Swell; Funds Don’t
At San Diego City College, Burgess said his enrollment
grew 12 percent this fall, but his district was only allocated enough
money to grow 1.4 percent.
“It will be a mighty slim year but we will
struggle along and continue to serve students,” said Dr. Terry Burgess,
president of San Diego City College. “I fear next year may be as bad.”

Turning to the Internet is something Rodriguez had
been trained to do in his City College remedial math class, where he and about
20 classmates have been the first to take advantage of more than $100,000 worth
of computer equipment given as a grant to the school.
Teacher Julio Villarreal walked around the class,
helping each student with the exercise. Some students helped each other, while
others clicked onto the Internet for extra reading and guidance. Only about
one-third of the students have access to computers and the Internet at home,
Villarreal said, so using the technology in class added an exciting element. ...
