Why Assessment?

We believe that dialogue concerning our values and beliefs about teaching and learning is essential. Further, we believe that assessment of student learning creates an academic culture, its programs and ultimately, learning.

Assessment at City in the future will continue to focus a great deal upon Student Learning Outcomes.  Student performance will be measured at the completion of a:

  • program

  • Degree

  • Certificate

  • series of interactions in a non-classroom office/program

Categorization of Student Learning Outcomes

In recognition of the breadth and depth of learning which occurs on campus, it is useful to enumerate various categories of Student Learning:

  • complex cognitive skills

  • knowledge acquisition

  • interpersonal development

  • social development

  • academic achievement

  • practical competence

  • civic responsibility

  • environmental responsibility

Students Learning Outcomes Definition

The knowledge, skills abilities, attitudes, habits of mind or competencies that students have at the completion of a course, program or series of activities/interactions, the presence and quality of which can be measured and evaluated.

City College "6 Columns Model"

City College's framework for assessment is based upon an adaptation of the Institutional Effectiveness Associates (IEA) "Five Column Model" by Jim Nichols.  This model pragmatically focuses attention on delineation and measurement of a Student Learning Outcome (SLO), while demonstrating class or program linkages back to Institutional Competencies, and to Institutional Mission and Priorities

Column 1: Expansion of Institutional Purpose - This is City College's mission and priorities derived from the Master Planning process.

Column 2: Institutional competencies

Column 3: Program Level Student Learning Outcomes

Column 4: Means of Assessment and Criteria for Success

Column 5: Data Summary

Column 6: Describes use of results to improve the program
