Why Assessment? top

As a follow-up to our campus Student Learning Initiatives in Fall Semester 2005 and Spring 2006, the Institutional Assessment Committee would like to update the campus on milestones in our assessment work.

 Significant accomplishments include:

  • Departmental posters from Fall FLEX documenting departmental assessment philosophy complied onto Word documents and CD's for faculty and staff.

  • Faculty members participated in two San Diego conferences with additional assessment detail from Norena Badway, Fall 2005 convocation speaker.

  • The Institutional Assessment Committee (IAC) supported and was active on the Student Project and Research Symposium Planning group to help bring the 2nd Annual Symposium to City College. This symposium celebrated student learning and achievement in many fields, including 61 posters, 16 PowerPoint presentations, demonstrations of martial arts, the fine arts, together with powerful presentations of the ‘spoken word”. Students made visible the competencies that we see as the strength and foundation of City College.

  • Linkage with the Title V committee work to enhance, demonstrate and measure learning goals in the areas of diversity, access, global awareness. Spring 2006 FLEX workshops and panel discussions provided linkage between Title V work and the Assessment of Student Learning.

  • Institutional Assessment Committee (IAC) Co-chairs participate at new faculty orientation on the values, philosophy and assessment approach at City College.

  • Student learning outcomes are now incorporated into the VTEA fund proposal requirement.

  • An Assessment Handbook was created and distributed to department chairs and program heads to support departments in assessment work. This handbook serves as a hardcopy reference for assessment and in the construction of student learning outcomes.

  • Completion of an Assessment web page from the College website at www.sdcity.edu/iac

  • Many instructional departments and programs are now at various stages in the Student Learning Outcome Assessment Cycle. The following, while not an exhaustive list, is representative of some of the work to date:  top

·         Business and Accounting has constructed six Student Learning Outcomes within the department.

·         Philosophy presentation to Assessment Committee on departmental work to date: embedded classroom assessment. Student Learning Outcome focus is on assessment of the validity of an argument.

·         Biology Department is in the process of data collection on their assessment pre and post testing methodology

·         Child Development has collected data for three semesters on the students’ ability to use positive guidance skills that encourage child problem solving.  Their advisory committee has reviewed their long-list of student learning outcomes and has given feedback on what they see as priorities for potential employees.

·         Physical Sciences sponsored an on-campus retreat with an assessment focus. Significant strides have been made within the department.

·         Digital Music Technology: utilization of the Assessment Framework in support of their request for VTEA funding for program enhancement/improvement.  top

·         The International Programs Coordinator has met with assessment co-chairs to incorporate assessment into International Program work

·         Student Health Services identified learning outcomes for medical/nursing care at City College and has begun data collection.

  • In addition to continued educational workshops and one-to-one sessions on City College’s Six Column Method, the committee created the 10 Self-Paced Steps to the City College Student Learning Assessment Cycle to further assist faculty and staff in utilization of the methodology.

  • This summer IAC representatives will work with the Classified Senate to facilitate personal visits with Classified Staff to learn how best to fully engage the entire campus community in the assessment initiative.

  • Installed and posted information on a new bulletin board near the mailroom to communicate assessment efforts at City College
