CHILD DEVELOPMENT

We Believe Our Students:

• Have busy lives-work, families

• May struggle with basic skills

• Could benefit from tutoring & other campus support services

• Want to work (job oriented)

• May fear the academic environment

• May have strong pre-conceived notions/beliefs about what's best for children and may be a barrier to open inquiry

• Bring to class a rich heritage of cultural diversity and experiences that need t be acknowledged and appreciated

Favorite Assignments:

• Observations

• Community service

• Curriculum planning and resource files

• Demonstrations & Presentations

• Reflection Papers

• Scenario Analysis

• Interviews

Important Knowledge:

1. Variety of ECE Philosophies & Theories

2. Patterns of Typical and Atypical, Growth and Development

• Developmentally Appropriate Practice

• Government Guidelines and Regulations

• Inter-relatedness of Child, Family, Community & Cultural influences

Important Abilities:

• To have Positive Interpersonal Skills

• To be a Team Player

• To Articulate Clearly

Important Skills:
top

1. Lesson Planning

as per philosophy of school/program working in

2. Written and Oral Communication Skills in English

3. Implementing Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Planning, Guidance & Facilitating learning

4. Organizational Skills

paperwork and physical environment

What Frustrates Us:

• Students unprepared for college level reading and writing skills

• Meaningless course advisories vs. pre-requisites

• Student with inadequate English articulations skills

Must be role models for young children/early language development

• Some students desire units vs. knowledge

• Large class sizes. Need to open more sections rather than increase class size

6. Adjunct instructors don't have office space, storage space and hours to meet with students.
