Nursing Prerequisites

ADMISSION INFORMATION 
All students who complete the academic prerequisites are eligible for admission. Students may be admitted by transfer or challenge having met all basic entrance requirements and other designated criteria. The Nursing Program accepts a class of 50-60 first year students each fall semester.

BASIC ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Completion of the following PREREQUISITES with a minimum grade of "C" or better and a combined grade point average of 2.5 or higher is required.
    a. Biology 230, Human       Anatomy, 4 semester units or equivalent.
    b. *Biology 235, Human Physiology, 4 semester units or equivalent.
    c. *Biology 205, Microbiology, 5 semester units or equivalent.
*Must be completed within a seven-year period preceding qualifying date of eligibility. Qualifying date of eligibility refers to the date of filing completed application materials including official transcripts with the Nursing Admission's Advisor. Students may also be required to complete Biology 107 and Chemistry 100 and 100L. Refer to College Catalog for specific information.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE
1. Contact the Nursing Admissions office at (619) 388-3471 upon completion of the prerequisite classes.

2. Provide official high school transcripts or a copy of your GED Certificate. If you have been awarded a postsecondary degree, submit official college transcripts. 

3. Submit official college transcripts to the Nursing Admission's Advisor listing prerequisites, including courses taken through the San Diego Community College District. Documentation indicating completion of all prerequisites must be submitted before acceptance is finalized.

4. LVN-RN Advanced Placement students must submit a copy of a current and active California Vocational Nursing license with their application materials.

5. When requested, submit health history, medical examination, immunization forms and evidence of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification - Basic Life Support (Forms will be sent to you some time in May preceding the start of the nursing program).

 


 

SELECTION OF APPLICANTS

1. When the application is complete and all admission requirements have been met, the applicant's name will be placed on the next available class list.

2. Verification of an applicant's continued interest in the nursing program will occur on an ongoing basis. Continued interest letters will be mailed approximately 3-4 times per year while an applicant is on the waiting list. It is the responsibility of the applicant to return each continued interest letter by the deadline date. If written notification is not received, the applicant's admission status will be cancelled.

3. Candidates will have two (2) opportunities to enter the nursing program at San Diego City College after a priority number has been assigned. If unable to enroll upon second notification, the candidate will lose priority status and be placed at the end of the list.

TRANSFER/ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Applicants who wish to transfer from another school of nursing or who are graduates of approved schools of vocational nursing must meet all entrance requirements, including the completion of designated prerequisites. 
Eligibility for transfer credit and/or advanced placement is determined on an individual basis by the nursing department. Applicants who may be eligible for advanced placement include those individuals who have satisfactorily completed, within the last five (5) years:

1. Professional nursing courses from an accredited school of nursing.
2. Basic or advanced courses in nursing offered during military service.
3. An accredited vocational/practical nursing program.
4. An accredited psychiatric technician program.
5. A certified nursing assistant program.
6. Other courses which the school determines as equivalent to courses in the current nursing program.

CHALLENGE/ADVANCED PLACEMENT

1. Students with health-related education or work experience, within the last five years, must submit official records of courses and/or experiences to the Director of Nursing Education.

2. After a review of applicant's record, the student may be required to take a competency skills examination and/or a written challenge examination, if course equivalency in the nursing curriculum cannot be identified.

3. Students who believe they are eligible to challenge courses by examination must file a petition for challenge with the Director of Nursing Education (A maximum of 15 units may be challenged by exam).

4. Written and clinical competency examinations for advanced placement or challenge must be completed six weeks prior to admission to the program, unless waived by the Director of Nursing Education.
